About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS), is recruiting for a floating Cook to join their food services team. This position is based in Manchester, CT, and will be used to travel to other CTECS schools for kitchen support on an as-needed basis. The role requires full-range experience in preparing and cooking food and involves travel throughout Connecticut. This is a 10-month position operating during the school year, with a return to work after summer break. The schedule is full-time, first shift, 37.5 hours per week, from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of experience in the preparation of food on a quantity basis.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply cooking principles and techniques on a quantity basis
  • Knowledge of liquid and dry weights and measures
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements in food service
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to utilize computer software
  • Ability to prepare menus and keep records
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations
  • Must obtain a ServSafe Certification within 60 days of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with large volume food production in a school cafeteria or similar setting.
  • Experience independently performing tasks to include ordering, inventory, and completion of daily production records.
  • Experience in using institutional food service equipment.
  • Experience in a supervisory role with management of staff members and kitchen workflow.
  • Experience utilizing Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Possession of or ability to acquire food safety certification within 60 days.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and serve complete daily meals
  • Follow basic food safety and sanitation guidelines and procedures
  • Interact with various populations including students, faculty and administration
  • Use basic technology, including email
  • Prepares and cooks a wide variety of foods including special diets
  • Operates various types of cooking equipment such as stoves, ovens, steam cookers, mixing machines, choppers, etc.
  • Cleans kitchen areas and equipment
  • Rotates stock on a regular basis
  • Assists with the ordering of food and supplies
  • Inspects food received
  • May serve food or assist in serving
  • May prepare production records
  • Performs related duties as required
