Flight Test Instrumentation Engineer

Joby Aviation•Marina, CA
•$83,600 - $134,200

About The Position

Joby is seeking an engineer to develop, improve, and maintain data acquisition hardware, real-time visualization software, and processes for installing and maintaining flight test instrumentation on its VTOL electric aircraft. The role works with a small team in a fast-paced, hands-on environment and supports Joby’s flight-test program as the company prepares for aircraft certification and commercial service. The engineer will develop and configure instrumentation systems, create installation and configuration-control processes, produce CAD models and engineering drawings, and build LabVIEW-based tools for real-time and post-flight data visualization, automated data pipelines, and calibration traceability. The role also integrates new data acquisition instruments, analyzes flight data to maintain and improve instrumentation functionality, and helps develop processes and software that support the transition from R&D testing to certification flight testing.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Engineering or a relevant discipline, or equivalent work experience and training.
  • Mechanical design and manufacturing experience.
  • Experience with data acquisition hardware and sensors such as foil strain gauges, accelerometers, load cells, thermocouples, and encoders, including sensor installation.
  • Fluency using LabVIEW for data collection, real-time data analytics, and GUI development.
  • Experience using Diadem, MATLAB, Python, or another scripting language for data post-processing.
  • Experience with digital signal processing and wireless data transmission.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Hands-on attitude and strong analytical background.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience with CATIA.
  • Experience working with flight test organizations and aircraft certification.
  • Experience with sensor installations and cable management.
  • Experience with NI hardware, specifically cDAQ and C Series modules.
  • Experience with software development using Python or another scripting language.
  • Hands-on machine shop skills using a lathe, mill, welder, and other machine shop equipment.
  • Experience with high-voltage electronics.
  • Experience testing aircraft composite structures.
  • Experience testing aircraft mechanical systems.
  • Aerospace and rapid prototyping experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and configure hardware and software for efficient deployment of supplementary flight test instrumentation on test aircraft.
  • Develop installation processes for instrumentation hardware across multiple aircraft and maintain configuration control throughout the life of the flight test aircraft.
  • Develop and maintain detailed CAD models and engineering drawings supporting design and manufacturing activities, ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry standards.
  • Use National Instruments LabVIEW and related tools to develop GUIs, LabVIEW VIs, and other tools for real-time and post-flight data visualization, automated data pipelines, and calibration traceability for each flight test aircraft.
  • Incorporate new types of data acquisition instruments into the flight test instrumentation system and data pipelines.
  • Analyze flight-collected data to improve and maintain instrumentation functionality and provide engineering teams with quantifiable feedback to understand and optimize designs.
  • Help guide the architecture of processes and software tools that support the transition from R&D testing to certification flight testing.
