Flight Software Engineer II

Vantage SystemsWashington, DC
$119,413 - $167,183

About The Position

This position provides engineering support to the flight and ground system design and development team. The goal is to assure system integrity, apply standards where practical, exploit new and emerging technologies, and develop systems with an emphasis on the reuse of applicable software components in both ground and space systems to reduce development time and cost. The role involves designing and developing all software related to spacecraft bus functions, instrument control, and onboard data processing. This includes developing software for run-time external commanding, controlling, and configuring, as well as run-time delivery of status, event logs, state of health, and telemetry. A key responsibility is developing safety-critical applications capable of detecting software and hardware faults and responding to them through isolation or recovery. The engineer will also develop software control of flight systems leveraging real-time sensing and actuating interfaces, and develop hardware and application-specific boot code for establishing baseline flight services and loading OS and application code into execution memory. The role requires evaluating and applying advanced mathematical methods and algorithms in software solutions, and developing, maintaining, and enhancing complex software systems based on documented requirements. Specific input will be provided for software components of system design, including hardware/software trade-offs, software reuse, use of COTS/GOTS, and requirements analysis. The engineer will design, implement, and integrate software applications, utilizing appropriate software engineering and design methodologies. Ensuring efficient delivery of software engineering capabilities through industry standards and repeatable processes is crucial. The role also involves mitigating risks, controlling costs and schedule variance, and managing large-scale, integrated software projects. Finally, the engineer will review and test software components for adherence to design requirements and document test results.
