About The Position

The Flight Paramedic provides critical clinical services by delivering advanced emergency and critical care treatment and patient transport within the air medical environment. Functioning as an integral member of the flight crew, this role performs advanced assessments and interventions within paramedic scope of practice while adhering to Trinity Health policies, established air medical protocols, and strict aviation safety standards. Working in close collaboration with flight nurses, pilots, and medical direction, the Flight Paramedic contributes to a highly coordinated, team-based approach to patient care where communication, trust, and shared accountability are essential. This position operates within a structured, safety-focused environment supported by experienced leadership and a strong culture of clinical excellence.

Requirements

  • North Dakota Paramedic License
  • Must be a National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) licensed Paramedic at the time of hire.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required at time of hire.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required at time of hire.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required at time of hire.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) required at time of hire.
  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years flight experience is required.
  • Instructor status and/or willing to obtain such status for most EMS courses. If not currently an instructor, he/she will obtain within 6 months of beginning in this role.
  • The Flight Paramedic requires the ability to work in confined aircraft spaces for extended periods, including standing, sitting, and kneeling while providing patient care; frequently lifting, carrying, and positioning patients and equipment; and maintaining balance and coordination in a moving aircraft.
  • Team members must be able to lift, push, or pull at least 50 pounds and assist with heavier loads as part of a team.
  • Adequate vision, hearing, and communication abilities are essential for safe patient care and coordination in the aviation environment.
  • Work is performed in helicopters and other air medical transport settings as well as healthcare facilities and outdoor environments, with potential exposure to vibration, noise, weather extremes, infectious diseases, bodily fluids, and emotionally stressful situations.
  • Duties involve working in confined spaces and following strict aviation and safety protocols.
  • Use of PPE is required, and variable schedules including nights, weekends, holidays, and oncall duty may be necessary.

Nice To Haves

  • Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) preferred.
  • Previous leadership experience is preferred.
  • Membership in professional organization(s) is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced life support and critical care interventions during air medical transports in accordance with flight protocols and paramedic scope of practice.
  • Perform comprehensive assessments, initiate treatments, and adjust care based on patient condition and transport environment.
  • Collaborate with flight nurses, pilots, and receiving facilities to coordinate safe and effective patient care and transport.
  • Maintain readiness of clinical equipment and medications on the aircraft; participate in safety checks and drills.
  • Document assessments, interventions, and transport details accurately in air medical and hospital systems.
  • Participate in training, simulation, and quality improvement activities specific to air medical operations.
