About The Position

AMERICAN SYSTEMS, an employee-owned federal government contractor, is seeking Flight Instrumentation and System Integration Engineers to support pioneering aerospace research and flight missions that push the boundaries of innovation. In this role, you will help design and integrate the hardware, software, avionics, power, and instrumentation systems that make safe, successful flight possible. Working alongside NASA, AFRC partners, aircraft technicians, and multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will play a key role in solving complex challenges and advancing technologies that shape the future of flight.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or physical science with 5-7+ years of experience
  • U.S. citizenship required
  • Must pass drug screening
  • Working knowledge of engineering principles and systems engineering processes
  • Ability to lead and multitask in a dynamic environment, prioritize work, and coordinate schedules
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to safe work practices and standards
  • Ability to manage and break down technical requirements in specific areas
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Experience in one or more of the following: avionics hardware, commercial or military data buses, software design/development/management, real-time systems or system test and validation
  • Demonstrated originality, sound judgment, and analytical ability in solving complex engineering problems
  • Ability to apply standard methodologies while using innovative thinking, problem-solving, and independent judgment

Responsibilities

  • Support the design, integration, testing, and operation of aircraft instrumentation and mission systems for advanced flight research programs.
  • Translate project objectives into hardware, software, system, and subsystem requirements.
  • Develop and maintain interface control documents, schematics, wiring designs, specifications, and other technical documentation.
  • Define and support requirements for avionics, power, instrumentation, software, and integration/test activities.
  • Design and integrate instrumentation interfaces with aircraft, avionics, flight controls, power systems, and research payloads while considering space, weight, and power constraints.
  • Support AIMS-related efforts, including electronic and mechanical design, software engineering, installation coordination, troubleshooting, and operational procedure development.
  • Review test plans and procedures to ensure effective methodologies and compliance with AFRC standards and processes.
  • Develop and execute verification and validation plans for systems, subsystems, avionics, power, and software.
  • Support system integration, checkout, airworthiness qualification, EMI and EMC compliance, and flight readiness efforts.
  • Identify and coordinate test resources, equipment, and support required to demonstrate compliance with project requirements.
  • Perform integration and troubleshooting for flight vehicles, ground support equipment, and specialized research systems.
  • Provide technical support to aircraft technicians for system checks, calibrations, preflight/post-flight procedures, and anomaly resolution.
  • Develop and maintain procedures for testing, calibration, acceptance, and system operations.
  • Support software development, documentation, baseline management, and lifecycle activities for airborne and ground-based systems.
  • Coordinate with safety and software assurance teams to assess software criticality and compliance.
  • Provide project status updates, identify technical risks, and recommend solutions.
  • Participate in design reviews, safety reviews, configuration boards, and technical briefings.
  • Collaborate with AFRC partners, NASA centers, vendors, and manufacturers to support safe and successful flight operations.
  • Support the integration of automated test tools into project activities.
