About The Position

The Department of Aviation and Technical Education at Utah State University is seeking a Flight Instructor / Mentor Pilot / Standardization Officer. Under general direction and guidance, the Certified Flight Instructor provides leadership, instruction, and standardization for flight students in Logan, Utah. The incumbent serves as a Mentor Pilot to both flight instructors and students, promoting professionalism, consistency, and safety across the program. This role includes active participation in standardization efforts, ensuring alignment with Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), Training Course Outlines (TCO), and USU operational procedures. The position emphasizes continuous improvement, instructional quality, and adherence to standardized teaching practices. This is a full-time, benefited position with an expected workload of approximately 40 hours per week, consisting of: 30 hours per week as a CFI/CFII, including instruction and stage checking 10 hours per week dedicated to teaching, standardization, mentor pilot duties, safety oversight, and/or other assignments as directed by the Chief or Assistant Chief Flight Instructors In addition, the incumbent will assist with program development, instructor mentorship, and other duties as assigned by leadership. Hours and work weeks may vary depending on requirements, but tracking of all worked hours will be required.

Requirements

  • Airplane Single- and Multi-Engine Commercial Certificates with at least a Second-Class Medical
  • Current Certified Flight Instructor (CFI); CFII preferred or required within program standards
  • Meet Pilot in Command (PIC) recent flight experience requirements of FAR §61.57
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor, lead, and promote standardization among peers
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • No FAA deviations or violations

  • Glass cockpit experience (G1000)
  • Diamond DA40/DA42 experience
  • CFI Initial qualification experience
  • Stage check or evaluating experience
  • Experience in a Part 141 training environment
  • Previous experience in stage checker, standardization, mentor pilot, or training leadership roles
  • Prior classroom or ground instruction teaching experience

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality flight and ground instruction in accordance with FAA regulations and USU procedures
  • Serve as a Mentor Pilot to flight instructors and students, fostering professionalism and instructional consistency - you may be required to help new hired CFI’s transition to USU standards.
  • Conduct and supervise flight training activities
  • Monitor and evaluate student and instructor flight performance
  • Perform stage checks, end-of-course tests, and flight instructor proficiency checks
  • Ensure compliance with FARs, TCOs, and university policies
  • Actively participate in and support standardization efforts, including initial and recurrent instructor standardization
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of standardized teaching techniques and procedures
  • Support the Standardization Officer function, helping ensure consistency across instructors, syllabi, and training outcomes.
  • Advise and support lead flight instructors and training staff
  • Participate in recruitment, interviews, and hiring recommendations for prospective flight instructors
  • Interview prospective students and parents as needed
  • Monitor student progress and maintain accurate training records
  • Assist in maintaining the safety management system and safety manual
  • Teach assigned courses or ground training sessions on campus or at the airport
  • Schedule, organize, and lead instructor meetings and standardization briefings
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief or Assistant Chief Flight Instructors
