About The Position

The Safety Investigator supports the aviation safety assurance programs at Intermountain Health Flight & Ambulance Services and functions as a member of the safety investigations team. The primary responsibility will be to conduct objective and independent assessments of operational, technical, and safety processes at the organization as part of the Internal Evaluation Program (IEP). Further duties involve investigating safety reports, trending issues, and operational irregularities as identified by Intermountain Health Flight & Ambulance Services’ safety assurance programs (ASAP, FOQA, Safety reporting, and others). Essential Functions Performs risk-based scheduled evaluations on operational elements within Intermountain Health Flight & Ambulance Services in flight operations, maintenance, dispatch, safety, and other areas. Identifies system risk, non-compliance with regulations and company policies/procedures. Establishes and maintains relationships with all departments in the organization that are covered under the IEP. Assists process owners and organizational leaders to conduct root-cause analysis on non-conformances. Assists process owners and organizational leaders in developing corrective action plans. Through risk-based methodologies and trend analysis, identifies areas requiring special emphasis oversight via the IEP. Develops additional IEP evaluations of identified special emphasis areas. Perform audits and evaluations on external vendors, interfaced organizations, and external partners. Assists the SMS Program Manager with SMS audits (corrective action/control implementation and validation follow-up). Performs special duties related to external audits (FAA, CAMTS, other regulatory and accrediting bodies). Organizes and keeps records of all IEP files as required by 14 CFR Part 5 (SMS) regulations. Assist the Safety Assurance Manager with ASAP, FOQA, and other safety assurance programs in investigating reports, irregularities, and trends. Performs one-time audits, evaluations, investigations, and projects on special emphasis areas. Present evaluation, audit, and investigation findings to process owner groups.

Requirements

  • Aviation experience in operations, maintenance, dispatch, safety, quality, or regulatory compliance roles with a 14 CFR Part 121, Part 135, or Part 145 certificate holder (or military or foreign equivalent).
  • Superb working knowledge of aviation safety management systems.
  • Superb working knowledge of Part 135 regulations, other applicable regulations and standards.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance principles, including auditing, root cause analysis, and corrective actions/mitigations.
  • Knowledge of aviation maintenance and aviation operations management, terminology and software.
  • Knowledge of aircraft maintenance records, pilot records, and other aviation operations records.
  • Knowledge of safety performance indicators (SPIs).
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and planning skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, work collaboratively, set realistic project goals and deadlines, with consistent delivery.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in aviation safety, aviation management, aviation science, or similar field or an additional 2+ years of experience in aviation IEP, Quality, or Compliance auditing.
  • FAA certificate (A&P, Commercial Pilot/ATP, Dispatch, or foreign equivalent).
  • Previous experience in aviation operations, safety, quality, or regulatory compliance.
  • Previous certification as an auditor (IATA/IOSA, IBAC/IS-BAO, ARGUS, ISO 9001, AS9100, or similar).
  • Previous experience at an air ambulance operator.
  • Knowledge of helicopter air ambulance operations (14 CFR Part 135 Subpart L).
  • Knowledge of CAMTS and other applicable air medical transport standards.
