About The Position

This position works Monday-Friday from 11 am to 7:30 pm. The primary role is to provide support in Specimen Processing but will occasionally assist with difficult draws in hospital bed towers and/or the Emergency Department. The role involves flexing to the biggest departmental need between processing and phlebotomy. The Phlebotomist Special Procedures works under the general supervision of the Pre-Analytical Services Manager and is an integral member of the Laboratory department. This role requires 1-2 years of Phlebotomy experience and specializes in either Specimen Processing or Pre-Admission Testing. The Phlebotomist Special Procedures is responsible for the collection and submission of samples, facilitating the flow of specimens, and specimen requirement information. The role also performs EKG testing according to defined protocol, ensures timely download of EKG machines, and maintains specimen integrity in the specimen processing area of the laboratory.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years of Phlebotomy experience
  • High school diploma/GED, or higher education
  • BLS/CPR through the American Heart Association
  • Strong proven customer relations skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Medical terminology knowledge

Nice To Haves

  • Phlebotomy Certification or Medical Assistant preferred
  • Advanced training in analytical processes and information systems preferred
  • Experience in hospital and or/independent laboratory setting
  • Prior hospital or physician office registration experience preferred
  • Experience with Laboratory Information System, ABN software, and insurance databases preferred

Responsibilities

  • Utilizing standard venipuncture techniques, collect appropriate blood specimens and maintain integrity by correct collection protocol.
  • Perform specialized blood collection tests such as blood cultures, adhering to defined protocol with no deviations.
  • Adhere to strict standards when labeling blood specimens/non-blood specimens and provide the required information, ensuring adequate patient identification with each patient encounter.
  • Follow all defined policies and procedures for universal blood and body fluid precautions and Infection Control practices.
  • Maintain appropriate professionalism at all times, explaining blood collection to patients while ensuring patient rights, safety, privacy, confidentiality, and a "customer relations" philosophy.
  • Perform Urine Drug Screen and COC collection, Blood Alcohol, and H. Pylori Breath test collection according to defined protocol as necessary.
  • Manage patient workload.
  • Demonstrate competence with Laboratory Information System.
  • Process specimens ensuring proper identification and monitoring specimen integrity for testing, including specimen sorting, computer receipt/changing orders, centrifugation, and specimen aliquoting.
  • Responsible for the delivery of identified specimens to the laboratory either via pneumatic tube system or manual transport in a timely manner to ensure accurate reporting and turn around times.
  • Transport specimens between facilities as assigned.
  • Responsible for maintaining phlebotomy trays and phlebotomy supply inventory.
  • Perform off-site phlebotomy as assigned.
  • Attend Phlebotomy staff meetings or read and acknowledge meeting minutes.
  • Demonstrate current knowledge of the organizational occurrence reporting process and expectations.
  • Identify opportunities to participate with quality improvement initiatives/teams.
  • Maintain CAP regulations and guidelines in all phlebotomy practices.
  • Identify when questions or activities are beyond personal skill mix and use critical thinking skills to determine the most appropriate resource to utilize.
  • Maintain current knowledge and skill needed to effectively and accurately access available resources (e.g., SOFT, Mayo).
  • Demonstrate service recovery by involving Customer Service, Patient Relations, or Preanalytical Services Manager.
  • Demonstrate ability to properly utilize Vocera.
  • Perform EKG testing according to defined protocol, ensure timely download of EKG machines and document on appropriate log sheet.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the PAT department to complete paper charts and filing.
  • Document clinical data into the Hospital Information System.
  • Responsible for maintaining the phlebotomy supply inventory in the PAT department.
  • Serve as a key resource to SDS, ATU, Endo, PACU, OR and PAT by floating to different areas as needed.
