About The Position

The HSS Orthopedics Now program provides consistent, immediate access for patients 12 years and older with an undiagnosed musculoskeletal injury or sudden onset of pain to be triaged, receive an initial diagnosis, and if appropriate, quickly connected to the right subspecialized level of care. The HSS Orthopedics Now Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) sees patients at an HSS location to triage, diagnose, treat, and when needed, refer patients to a higher level of care in an expedited timeframe. The NP/PA sees patients autonomously, in collaboration with, and with the support of HSS physicians. The NP/PA is an advanced practice provider who is licensed to practice their profession and provides a full range of primary, acute, and specialty healthcare services. The NP/PA is responsible for diagnosing and treating acute musculoskeletal injuries including, but not limited to: Bone, joint, or muscle injuries, Strains, sprains, minor dislocations, and closed fractures, Painful, swollen, or injured joints, Back and neck pain, Osteoarthritis (OA), Pediatric injuries (12 years of age and older), Sports Injuries, Steroid injections and joint aspirations, General bracing and splinting. The Flex APP for HSS Orthopedics Now will be expected to provide planned coverage at our program's sites across the regional locations. Coverage planning will be made in advance of anticipated shifts. There will be expected travel to HSS' regional locations.

Requirements

  • Obtain/Maintain NP licenses in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
  • FNP Required.
  • Obtain/Maintain board certification as a NP in specialty area of practice.
  • Experience with injections, aspirations, and casting.
  • ACLS and BLS via American Heart Association.
  • DEA license (primary site only).
  • Obtain/Maintain PA license in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
  • Obtain/Maintain current NCCPA certification.

  • NP National board certification as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) from an agency accredited by the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) (e.g. ANCC, AANP).
  • PA Current NCCPA Certificate - 100 hours of continuing medical education must be logged every 2 years.
  • Recertification Examination must be taken every 6-10 years and passed successfully.
  • Infection Control Certificate must be current.

  • Possesses a basic understanding of anatomy, physiology and disease process related to orthopedic injury.
  • Performs a directed comprehensive history and physical examination.
  • Develops a differential diagnosis, and treatment plan appropriate to the patient injury and clinical presentation.
  • Orders studies to ensure a comprehensive and appropriate workup for the involved patient’s injury or disease.
  • Uses sound judgment when acting independently or escalating more complex issues to the Attending physician.
  • Identifies, responds to and triages emergent issues, escalates appropriately and ensures follow-up.
  • Performs outpatient procedures including but not limited to intra-articular injections and aspirations consistent with their DOP at the direction of the Supervising MD.
  • Prepares written or electronic documentation.
  • Provides comprehensive documentation in H&P, progress notes, problem list and medication reconciliation.
  • Documents and accurately assesses patient events (ie, metabolic changes, neurovascular changes, abnormal lab values, skin lesions, pressure ulcer staging, etc).
  • Participates in QA/PI program and requested team membership while improving performance based on results obtained.
  • Collaborates effectively with all surgical, medical and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Assist with training and orientation of new employees.
  • Completes E-learning modules on time.
  • Maintains competence and compliance with NP/PA Certification, CME requirements, BLS & ACLS certifications and attends NP/PA lectures, meetings, skills labs and hospital sponsored Conferences/Rounds when possible while demonstrating an interest in expanding and developing their knowledge base/skills as a NP/PA.
  • Complies with policies and procedures concerning infection control and safety in order to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for patients, visitors and staff while complying with their Annual Health Assessment requirement.
  • Initiates and maintains open, direct and effective written and verbal communication with colleagues/medical staff and all members of the department as applicable.
  • Responds to emails and pages as soon as possible in a professional manner with compassion and understanding.

Nice To Haves

  • Doctorate of Nursing Educational Preferences NP Doctorate in nursing practice (DNP) preferred.
  • Additional clinical certification in specialty area of practice.
  • 1-2 Years practicing in an outpatient or ambulatory setting, Sports medicine and/or emergency medicine experience.
