About The Position

The City of Idaho Falls is recruiting for a Fleet Mechanic – Journey Level to join its professional fleet maintenance team. In this role, you will diagnose, repair, and maintain a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment ranging from passenger vehicles and emergency response units to heavy-duty trucks and specialized equipment. This journey-level position offers hands-on work with everything from police vehicles and fire apparatus to heavy equipment, diesel trucks, hydraulics, turf equipment, and specialized machinery. This role is ideal for experienced mechanics who enjoy variety, advanced diagnostics, fabrication work, and solving complex mechanical and electrical problems. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED; plus completion of a two (2) year apprentice or vocational program in automotive and/or heavy equipment service and repair; AND Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in a field directly related to above duties; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable knowledge Design, adjustment, operation, maintenance, and repair of diversified mechanical, electrical and hydraulic equipment including: Light, medium, and heavy duty gasoline and diesel engines; Materials and tools used in equipment maintenance; Safety practices required by state and other laws; including EPA regulations and hazards common to equipment operations; Automotive air conditioning systems, air brakes and air systems, electrical systems and equipment; hydraulics, pneumatic and air equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Computer applications, including: word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
  • Journey level skill in the use of mechanical tools, materials, fabrication, and testing equipment.
  • Considerable skill in the operation of vehicles and equipment.
  • Ability to Diagnose complex and non-routine mechanical and electrical defects and determine parts and adjustments necessary to repair equipment.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Plan, organize; read and interpret service manuals, schematics and specifications.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
  • Must possess a valid Idaho CDL Class “B” with hazard and tanker endorsements within 180 days of employment.
  • Must possess tools sufficient to complete journey level repairs and projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Preference for ASE certified truck and/or auto mechanic with successful completion of any of the ASE test modules A 1 – A 9, or T 1 – T8.
  • May be required to be certified to perform state and federal safety inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains, inspects, and repairs City vehicles and equipment
  • Completes brake jobs, wheel balancing, suspension and steering system repairs, etc.
  • Performs complex diagnostic procedures, including: computer scanning and use of service manuals and schematics for electrical and mechanical troubleshooting
  • Repairs and maintains fuel systems, including: fuel injection systems, pumps, filters, etc.
  • Repairs and maintains exhaust emissions systems on both gasoline and diesel vehicles
  • Disassembles, repairs, and reassembles engines and transmissions
  • Maintains and repairs drive train components, including: differentials, axles, drive shafts, bearings etc.
  • Services pumps, ignition systems, clutches, cooling systems, HVAC, accessories, etc.
  • Diagnoses and repairs hydraulic systems
  • Oversees and performs emergency field repairs and service, utilizing service trucks and other equipment
  • Maintains and repairs various types of equipment, large and small, including: Large Equipment, General automotive, and Turf equipment
  • Upfits, customizes and installs vehicle equipment i.e., light package, radio, video, computer, etc.
  • Performs fabrication and modification projects using fabrication equipment. i.e. welders, plasma cutters, oxy-acetylene torch, grinders, band saw, drill press, etc., including reel grinding operations on equipment.
  • Participates in training and instructing less experienced personnel in complex maintenance and repair of automotive, medium, heavy-duty and turf equipment.
  • Provides general instruction to equipment operators in making minor repairs and performing pre-operational check of equipment.
  • Complies with established safety standards; enforces safety practices.
  • Maintains assigned work area. Keeps assigned area clean and free of hazards.
  • Assists in maintaining shared work areas in order to ensure safe and orderly day to day operations.
  • Operates equipment and vehicles in the shop and in the field to test and analyze for problems.
  • Utilizes fleet software to accurately record detailed work order descriptions of diagnostics and repairs performed on vehicles.
  • Accurately bills parts as needed.
  • Completes work orders and accurately inputs labor charges.
  • Works with Parts and Inventory Coordinator.
  • May order parts and materials; operates computer to input expense information related to division operations, projects and inventory; monitors computerized preventive maintenance program.
  • Periodically operates fuel truck to make deliveries to various city sites.
  • When certified, performs periodic fuel facility inspection.
  • May be required to occasionally work shifts on weekends, holidays, and/or night shifts.
  • Performs related duties as required.
