Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment, under limited supervision. Analyzes and diagnoses gas and fuel operated vehicles for maintenance defects. Performs Virginia state and emission inspections of vehicles and equipment. Performs road tests on new and repaired vehicles. Operates specialized equipment common to the automotive repair industry and machine shops. Performs related work as required. Schedules: Day Shifts - 5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., OR 11:00 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. Evening Shift - 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Locations: Alban, Jermantown, Newington or West Ox depending on the needs of the Department of Fleet Management (DFM). Note: Multiple full-time Fleet Technician I positions may be filled from this announcement. This is an entry-level position, and the salary offer will not exceed the mid-point ($72,728.66) of the advertised salary range. Compensation rules apply per Fairfax County personnel regulations for current Fairfax County Government and Fairfax County Public Schools employees. The position may be underfilled as a Fleet Technician Aide (S15); the Underfill Requirements are stated below in the Employment Standards section. A $2,500 sign-on bonus is available to new county employees hired in the full-time Fleet Technician I position. Applicants must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of application submission to be eligible. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee.
