About The Position

Perform maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment including sedans, light/medium/heavy trucks, trailers, and heavy work equipment. This role involves troubleshooting, inspecting, and repairing various systems such as hydraulic, heating and ventilation, steering, air brake, fuel, and exhaust systems. The technician will also assist with diagnosing complex problems, operate company vehicles, maintain tools and equipment, submit reports, and participate in training. There is an expectation to perform less skilled work as assigned, report irregularities, and assist or direct other employees as needed.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED required.
  • At least 2 years of strong automotive mechanical diagnosis with hydraulic and diesel repair experience.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Must qualify through demonstration, examination and/or performance appraisal as determined by the Company.
  • Must exhibit competency and aptitude in the fundamentals and mechanics of vehicle maintenance and repairs.
  • Must become familiar with and have the ability to operate the computer systems utilized by the Fleet Services organization.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from an automotive trade school with diesel engine experience is highly desirable.
  • Must obtain Class A CDL within 12 months of entry date into the Fleet Technician B classification or vacate the job classification.
  • Must obtain Fluid Power Society Certification and two (2) applicable ASE certifications within 24 months of entry date or vacate the current job classification.
  • Must acquire within such time frame as determined by the company, the qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the Fleet Technician A, or vacate the current job classification.
  • Successful completion of the Tuff Tech pre-employment placement test is required for this position.
  • For Fleet Techs that support Transmission, travel of 80% – 100% may be required.
  • Shift work may be required.
  • Must live within 35 mile radius or 40 roadway miles of the service location.

Responsibilities

  • Service and repair boom/pedestal assemblies of specialized equipment, including troubleshooting, inspecting cables, chains, rods, sheave liners, monitoring systems, fiberglass components, and turntables. This also includes removing and replacing reduction gearboxes, inspecting pins, bushings, and bearings, and load testing boom assemblies.
  • Service and repair hydraulic systems, including troubleshooting, and removing/replacing hydraulic pumps, motors, valves, cylinders, and accumulator, as well as swivel collector blocks.
  • Service and repair heating and ventilation systems, including diagnosing A/C unit problems, conducting pressure tests, checking for leaks, checking internal system controls, replacing compressors, servicing A/C clutch assemblies, and replacing compressor seals, refrigerant hose, condenser assembly, receiver dryer, and evaporator core.
  • Troubleshoot and repair winch assemblies.
  • Service and repair the steering system of Company vehicles, including power steering pumps and manual steering gearboxes.
  • Service and repair the air brake systems of Company vehicles, including air compressors, air brake chambers, and air control valves.
  • Service and repair hydraulic and electric braking systems, including inspecting and repairing master cylinders, testing power units and vacuum supply, inspecting power boost systems, repairing power brake systems, and servicing/repairing antilock brake systems.
  • Inspect and service differentials, power dividers, and transmission assemblies of Company vehicles, including manual clutches, manual transmissions and transfer cases, transaxles (front-wheel-drive), and automatic transmissions.
  • Service and repair the fuel and exhaust systems, including computer control systems, testing and repairing diesel fuel pumps, inspecting and servicing intake and turbo systems, servicing and repairing fuel injection systems (gas/diesel), and inspecting and servicing governors.
  • Assist others in the diagnosis of more complex problems.
  • Operate Company vehicles and associated equipment and perform duties incidental to the operation of such equipment.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and work area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Maintain records and submit reports as required.
  • Attend and participate in training as assigned and assist in the training of other employees.
  • Perform less skilled work as assigned.
  • Report irregularities and abnormal conditions.
  • Assist employees of equal or higher classification.
  • Direct the work of employees assigned to assist.
