About The Position

The City of Kent is seeking a skilled and dependable Fleet Mechanic 2 to join their Fleet Services team. This role involves performing mechanical repairs, diagnostics, and preventive maintenance on a diverse range of vehicles and heavy equipment, including passenger vehicles, emergency response units, construction equipment, tractors, and specialty machinery. The mechanic will work independently to inspect and diagnose issues, complete repairs, perform road tests, conduct job-site service calls, and maintain detailed service records, ensuring all work meets safety and performance standards. This position also supports emergency and response vehicle systems, including wiring, electronics, radios, and onboard technology, contributing to the reliability of critical City services. The ideal candidate has a high school diploma or equivalent, two years of post-high school training in mechanical maintenance and repairs, and three years of experience as a journey-level mechanic with diverse fleet experience.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Two (2) years of post-high school training or trade school in mechanical maintenance and repairs.
Three (3) years of experience as a journey level mechanic with knowledge and experience with a diversified fleet of heavy gasoline and diesel equipment and vehicles.
Knowledge of standard practices and techniques for maintenance and repair of a large, centralized fleet of automobiles, light and heavy trucks including all types of grounds maintenance and construction equipment.
Knowledge of principles of gasoline and diesel engines.
Knowledge of principles of hybrid and fully electric vehicle systems.
Knowledge of A/C Systems (R134A & R1234YF).
Knowledge of Hydraulic and electrical systems.
Knowledge of Electrical and wiring systems.
Knowledge of practices, methods, and tools used in acetylene and arc welding.
Knowledge of new technology and service requirements.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of a fleet repair facility.
Knowledge of engine and chassis units and general repair work.
Knowledge of safety requirements and specifications of various types of vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge of methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in fleet maintenance and repair.
Knowledge of correct usage of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary as it pertains to the job.
Knowledge of personal computers and their basic use.
Skilled in using hand and machine tools, including but not limited to electronic testing equipment.
Skilled in analyzing, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical problems.
Skilled in interpersonal communication and relations using tact, patience, and courtesy.
Skilled in gaining sensitive information about accidents/damage without alienating the driver/operator.
Ability to write legibly, maintain records and complete reports.
Ability to locate and correct mechanical defects using proper tools, parts or equipment for specific repair problems.
Ability to maintain required certifications.
Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in handling repair problems.
Ability to acquire knowledge of the operating details, procedures, specialized equipment and other characteristics of specified assignment.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, other City employees and outside individuals.
Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
Valid Washington State Driver's License, or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
Successful completion of the City's Defensive Driving Course within 6 months of employment.
New employees must successfully pass the City’s pre-employment driver's records check and; all employees must maintain an excellent driving record.
New employees must successfully pass the City’s pre-employment substance abuse screening, pre-employment physical agility and back examination.
Must successfully pass a position specific background inquiry.

Responsibilities

Perform journey level maintenance and mechanical repair of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, tractors, mowers and all other types of City power driven equipment in accordance with standard and OEM repair and maintenance procedures.
Operate both light and heavy equipment during pick-up and delivery and road testing of equipment.
Inspect vehicle/equipment for repair, diagnose problems and specify repair and parts required.
Perform job site repairs on equipment and vehicles as needed.
Inspect driver’s report of equipment malfunctions or deficiencies and determine necessary repairs, which are made in accordance with the latest standards and techniques.
Test and inspect completed work to ensure proper performance.
Maintain records and complete repair reports. Record accurate readings from fuel pumps on a rotating schedule. Complete all reports and paperwork on a timely basis.
Consult with Senior Mechanic for scheduling of work assigned on a regular basis.
Participate in the Division’s job safety program.
Communicate with and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, clients, contractors, and other city employees.
Clean and maintain the repair shop by cleaning tools, equipment, floors and work benches.
Weld and fabricate parts as needed.
Installation and maintenance of emergency and response vehicle electronics, including but not limited to strobe lights, light bars, lighted signs, radios, modems, computer systems, printers, inverters, theft lock out systems, and antennas.
Wiring harness set up, install fuses, relays, switches, and panels.
Programming, updating, and troubleshooting radios, other emergency systems, and Automated Vehicle Locator systems with existing software and coding.
Maintain records of installations.
Actively support the vision, mission, values and goals of the department and the City.
