As a member of Boston EMS’ management team, the Fleet Manager supports the acquisition and replacement schedule for all Boston EMS vehicles, including ambulances, SUVs, trucks, and other vehicles, in conjunction with the Office of the Chief, Operations, and Budget. This role ensures new vehicles are registered, assigned license plates, and set up for EZ Pass. The Fleet Manager coordinates with other departments for fuel and manages all fuel fobs. A key responsibility is managing a comprehensive maintenance and repair program for the department’s fleet, actively monitoring vehicle mileage, engine hours, and DEF, and working with Supervisors to schedule preventive maintenance. The role ensures ready spare ambulances are available for crews, minimizing the impact on emergency medical services when vehicles are out of service. The Fleet Manager oversees and manages vendors for outside maintenance, services, supplies, and repairs, and supervises record-keeping systems for vehicle inventory, repairs, and maintenance schedules. Additionally, this position establishes inventory procedures and controls, manages utilization, record keeping, and ordering. The Fleet Manager supervises all personnel assigned to Fleet Services, recommends hiring, and provides leadership, supervision, and guidance to ensure safe and efficient operations. This includes conducting performance evaluations, providing feedback, and implementing programs for mentoring and safety/technical training. The role also ensures the cleanliness and maintenance of the shop, monitors vehicle and equipment warranties and recalls, and coordinates with legal offices for accident claims. The Fleet Manager recommends vehicles for decommissioning and coordinates their resale, ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, and develops solid employee relations while implementing programs to increase personnel satisfaction. Regular meetings with the supervisor are expected, operating independently with independent judgment and discretion. The role requires carrying a department-issued phone, performing off-hour emergency tasks, and other duties as required. The Fleet Manager promotes health equity, inclusion, and diversity, and works to advance BPHC as an antiracist organization.
