About The Position

The Fleet Manager oversees the acquisition, maintenance, safety, compliance, and lifecycle management of Burgess Civil’s fleet of vehicles and heavy equipment. This role ensures all equipment is properly maintained, safe to operate, and available to support construction schedules. The Fleet Manager leads the fleet/maintenance team, sets standards for preventive maintenance, manages vendors, controls costs, and ensures compliance with DOT, OSHA, and internal safety policies.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of fleet or equipment management experience, preferably in civil construction, heavy equipment, or trucking.
  • Strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and construction equipment components.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations, OSHA standards, and fleet safety compliance.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, maintenance schedules, and inspection reports.
  • Experience managing vendors, budgets, and maintenance programs.
  • Proficiency with fleet management software, maintenance systems, and Microsoft Office.

  • Experience with telematics, GPS tracking, and preventive maintenance platforms.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Experience supporting multi‑site construction operations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of fleet assets, including light vehicles, heavy trucks, trailers, and construction equipment.
  • Maintain and update the fleet inventory, including asset tracking, assignments, title/registration records, and utilization reporting.
  • Ensure all equipment is in proper working condition and aligned with project needs.
  • Coordinate equipment delivery, mobilization, and demobilization across job sites.
  • Develop and execute a preventive maintenance schedule for all vehicles and equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical issues and determine appropriate repair paths.
  • Ensure maintenance logs, inspections, and service records are up to date.
  • Ensure all fleet operations meet DOT, OSHA, and state/local compliance requirements.
  • Verify CDL, medical cards, and applicable certifications for all operators.
  • Maintain vehicle/equipment inspection documentation and ensure compliance with company safety standards.
  • Investigate equipment‑related incidents and collaborate with Safety on corrective actions.
  • Manage vendor relationships for repairs, leasing, fuel cards, rentals, parts, and supplies.
  • Review and negotiate service agreements, rental contracts, and pricing.
  • Oversee warranty claims, parts returns, and cost‑recovery opportunities.
  • Manage fleet operating budget, including repairs, tires, parts, and replacement planning.
  • Track expenses and identify opportunities for cost reduction, lifecycle optimization, and operational efficiency.
  • Prepare reports on fleet costs, fuel usage, maintenance trends, and asset utilization.
  • Recommend and justify purchase, lease, replacement, or disposal of fleet assets.
  • Conduct cost‑benefit analyses to maintain a healthy equipment lifecycle.
  • Supervise and develop the fleet/maintenance team, including mechanics, equipment coordinators, and shop staff.
  • Assign workload, review performance, and ensure high levels of team productivity.
  • Conduct training on equipment care, safety procedures, and preventive maintenance expectations.
