About The Position

The City of Olathe is hiring one Fleet Maintenance Technician for our Light-Duty / Automotive team. This position may be filled at Technician Level I, II, III, or IV, level, depending on the selected candidate’s verified experience, certifications, and overall qualifications. Candidates who do not meet the requirements for a higher-level designation may still be considered for placement at the appropriate technician level. The Fleet Maintenance Technician uses their technical expertise to perform complex skilled maintenance, diagnostics and repairs to automotive, light, and medium duty trucks, and a wide variety of equipment such as but not limited to tractors and lawn mowers to ensure the vehicles and equipment operate safely and efficiently. This position is part of a four-level career progression of Fleet Maintenance Technician I, II, III and IV.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license with favorable driving record
  • Ability to obtain a Kansas Class B CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within 6 months of hire
  • A minimum of three years of training and/or experience in Automotive and Equipment Maintenance and repair is required.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent supplemented with course work in automotive technology is required.
  • A valid driver’s license with favorable driving record is required.
  • A class B commercial driver’s license with air brake endorsement is required within 6 months of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Trade school or coursework in automotive technology
  • Diagnostic and electrical experience
  • Police or public safety vehicle equipment experience
  • Welding/fabrication experience
  • Hydraulic experience preferred.
  • Trade school is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, brake, suspension, HVAC, and electrical issues
  • Perform preventive maintenance on light-duty fleet vehicles and related equipment to keep City fleet operations safe and reliable
  • Complete repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, and other vehicle systems
  • Assist with police vehicle upfitting and accessory installation, such as lights, radios, and related equipment
  • Maintain accurate service and repair records
  • Respond to emergency and after-hours service needs when required
  • Analyzes vehicle and equipment failures; determines causes, recommends and/or completes repair solutions including but not limited to engine, transmission, brake suspension, hydraulic and electric repairs using proper safety devices and procedures.
  • Performs routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, and fluid checks to prevent breakdowns and extend the lifespan of vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs equipment installation, fabrication, welding, and acetylene cutting for all types of vehicles and equipment.
  • Responds to emergency repairs and service calls on vehicles and equipment including afterhours calls.
  • Maintains accurate and detailed records; reports on repairs performed, equipment usage and condition.
