About The Position

The City of Richmond Department of General Services is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Fleet Maintenance Shop Supervisor in the Division of Fleet Services. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing operations for the assigned area of responsibility and supervising assigned staff. This class supervises the work of assigned Fleet Maintenance crews, and performs the most advanced work of those supervised. Incumbents supervise paraprofessional and support staff including conducting performance evaluations, coordinating training, and implementing hiring, discipline, and termination procedures. City of Richmond Department of Public Works employees who perform duties in this class are considered essential employees and may be required to work during times of emergencies, natural disasters, and inclement weather.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Six (6) years of automotive maintenance experience
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license within 30 days of hire
  • Computer Proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite and database management systems

  • Identifying and understanding automotive terminology
  • Reading and understanding manuals, specifications, etc.
  • Supervising and delegating duties to assigned staff

  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial driver's license

Responsibilities

  • Directing, repairing, servicing and maintaining a variety of gasoline and diesel powered automobiles, trucks and heavy equipment to include motors, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and body components
  • Diagnosing defects in automotive equipment and remedying the defects with approved methods
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with representatives of other departments regarding repair and maintenance of vehicles
  • Scheduling preventive maintenance inspections, preparing work orders, verifying mileage for next service interval
  • Inspecting shop equipment periodically to ensure compliance with shop safety standards and cleanliness
  • Maintaining accurate vehicle data records and preparing written reports
  • Inspecting new vehicles for proper equipment and optimal functioning
  • Reviewing accident and abuse reports
  • Overseeing employee training and development, evaluating performance and recording vacation, leave and daily clock-in actions
  • Performing other related duties as assigned by the Operations Manager
