About The Position

The Fleet Maintenance Manager supervises and participates in the duties of Fleet Services work-units providing specialized or advanced maintenance, repair, diagnosis or trouble-shooting, construction, fabrication and preventive maintenance. This position requires technical skills, experience, and knowledge in the fleet services field, as well as supervisory and management skills, and active use of technical skills to participate in unique or complex projects. Supervisors are accountable for the activities of assigned staff and ensure services or products of work-units comply with written procedures, specifications, contracts, industry standards and statutory codes and requirements. This is distinguished from the Fleet Services Support Manager classification by its greater focus on technical duties and supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in fleet management, transportation and logistics management, or a related field as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment AND four years of journey-level experience maintaining and repairing gas and diesel vehicles and off-road equipment INCLUDING one year of lead or supervisory experience.
  • Three years with Pima County in a Fleet Services Automotive Supervisor or closely-related position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.
  • Valid driver license is at time of application.
  • Valid AZ driver license is at time of appointment.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
  • Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination.
  • Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services’ review and approval of the candidate’s driving record.
  • The County requires pre-employment background checks.
  • Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.
  • Some positions may require satisfactory completion of a personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems.
  • This position will require a post-job offer physical and/or drug screen, which may include respirator fit test.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience in one or more of the following areas: Diagnosing mechanical issues, performing major and minor repairs, and verifying repair quality on automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, and off-road equipment.
  • Work experience in a Service Advisor role, to include preparing repair and maintenance work orders and conducting quality control reviews of completed work.
  • Manage ordering, receiving, and issuing of automotive parts and supplies within a commercial, industrial, or automotive repair environment.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on high-level committees or specialized projects, including leadership or active participation in professional associations within the fleet industry.
  • Participate or assist with developing vendor contracts, equipment specifications, and annual procurement plans for vehicles and equipment.
  • Minimum five (5) years of supervisory experience, including responsibility for staff training, coaching, performance evaluations, and administering disciplinary actions.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience preparing and managing the Fleet Services budget, including review of historical expenditures and revenues, and administering operational costs such as labor, parts, tools, training, and certifications.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience developing, implementing, and enforcing production metrics aligned with automotive industry standards.

Responsibilities

  • Directs and participates in the skilled analysis, maintenance, repair, fabrication or modification of vehicles and equipment based on technical references or engineering drawings.
  • Monitors the inspection and servicing of tools, vehicles, and equipment to ensure proper maintenance.
  • Develops quality control analysis of fleet vehicles to ensure proper functioning and directs necessary remedial actions.
  • Oversees detailed records of fleet activity, operations, service, and usage.
  • Directs scheduling and planning of fleet maintenance activities using a computer-based system.
  • Develops and manages work-unit budgets related to fleet services.
  • Prepares oral and written reports on fleet maintenance and operations.
  • Prepares cost estimates for maintenance, repairs, and special projects based on technical references and engineering plans.
  • Inspects and approves the work of others and certifies their work if certified or authorized.
  • Assists in developing Requests for Bids, contract provisions, and bid proposal evaluations related to fleet services.
  • Coordinates with other departments, work units, agencies, or contractors to optimize resource use and minimize service disruptions.
  • Monitors contractor performance for fleet-related goods and services.
  • Directs the proper storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials encountered during fleet maintenance.
  • Ensures that all fleet maintenance staff maintain security and accountability for tools and equipment.
  • Coordinates or provides training for fleet maintenance staff on techniques, safety, and equipment use.
