Under general supervision, perform mechanical maintenance and repair of cars, trucks, coaches, and other light, medium, and heavy-duty City vehicles and equipment. This role involves repairing, reconditioning, and maintaining a variety of diesel, gasoline, or alternative fuel-powered trucks, automobiles, buses, and other City vehicles and equipment. The technician will diagnose, analyze, recommend, and undertake repair, maintenance, and upkeep tasks, identifying necessary parts, supplies, and materials. Responsibilities include inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing vehicles and related systems such as air conditioning, fuel, electronic, and electrical systems. This also includes removing, inspecting, installing, reinstalling, and replacing various parts and items on automobiles, fire apparatus, heavy equipment, and construction equipment, including transmissions, hydraulic systems, brakes/suspension, and water pumps. The technician will complete paperwork for parts/supplies and document completed work, interacting with supervisors, contractors, employees, and other departments to provide information, resolve problems, and respond to inquiries. A key part of the role is performing complete diagnostic and repair of all engine components and vehicle systems using computerized testing equipment, testing and validating repairs, and performing scheduled, emergency, and/or preventative maintenance. The technician may also rebuild diesel engines and repair specialized equipment like wheelchair lifts and fire suppression/gas detection systems, determining compliance with repair and maintenance standards. Updating and maintaining files, records, logs, and reports, and observing safe work practices are also essential. If assigned supervisory duties, the technician will supervise the fleet maintenance crew, assigning, reviewing, and inspecting completed work for conformance with standards, guiding task performance, and training new technicians in maintenance procedures and techniques, including guiding them in more difficult or complex repairs. They will also complete employee performance appraisals and enforce personnel rules, regulations, and work behavior standards. Performing related duties as required, including duties of immediate supervisors or subordinate personnel to ensure continuity of operations during absences, and maintaining cleanliness of the work area and tools, are also part of the role.
