About The Position

This position is for a Fleet Electrical Engineer at Xcel Energy, with opportunities for placement at the Staff, Senior, or Principal Engineer level, commensurate with skills and experience. The role involves being a technical expert in advanced theories and processes for an assigned area, contributing to new principles, and tackling complex, innovative problems. The engineer will be responsible for major projects, act as an advisor to management and customers, and maintain external contacts. Assignments are often self-initiated, requiring the determination of courses of action and consultation for progress. The role may involve providing work direction to a team of engineers and professionals, leading multiple critical projects, and mentoring less experienced engineers. This position requires approximately 35% travel to Xcel plants, supported by mileage reimbursement or a fleet vehicle.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum.
  • Staff Engineer Level: 2+ years relevant engineering experience.
  • Staff Engineer Level: Demonstrated broad knowledge & proficiency in specialty area, knowledge of related specialties, & general knowledge of other related disciplines.
  • Staff Engineer Level: Ability to demonstrate the unique technical skills & core competencies for this engineering level established & documented by the organization.
  • Staff Engineer Level: EIT/FE (Engineer in Training/Fundamentals of Engineering) strongly preferred.
  • Senior Engineer Level: 5+ years relevant engineering experience with EIT/FE (Engineer in Training/Fundamentals of Engineering) required; 7+ years relevant engineering experience without EIT/FE.
  • Senior Engineer Level: Ability to demonstrate the unique technical skills and core competencies for this engineering level established & documented by the organization.
  • Principal Engineer Level: 9+ years relevant engineering experience with PE (Professional Engineer) registration required; 15+ years relevant engineering experience without PE.
  • Principal Engineer Level: Ability to demonstrate the unique technical skills and core competencies for this engineering level established & documented by the organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical generation, transmission, and grid components, as well as successful hands-on troubleshooting for such components.
  • Knowledge of Electrical Design, Arc Flash industry standards and NERC regulatory requirements related to electrical components.
  • Familiarity with typical electrical components such as generators, transformers, breakers, protective relays, switchyard subcomponents, and motors.

Nice To Haves

  • Electrical engineering degree preferred.
  • EIT/FE (Engineer in Training/Fundamentals of Engineering) strongly preferred for Staff Engineer level.
  • PE (Professional Engineer) registration may be required for Senior Engineer level depending on business need.
  • PE (Professional Engineer) registration required for Principal Engineer level.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical engineer or subject matter expert for the organization in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes for an assigned area of responsibility.
  • Contribute to the development of new principles and concepts.
  • Approach problems through a series of complex and conceptually related studies that are difficult to define and require unconventional or innovative approaches and sophisticated research techniques.
  • Be responsible for major projects or several complex projects of moderate to large scope.
  • Serve as the organization's spokesperson on advanced projects and/or programs.
  • Act as an advisor to management and customers on advanced technical research studies and applications.
  • Maintain contacts with individuals and units within and outside the corporation for action on technical matters.
  • Work under consultative direction toward broad general goals and objectives with assignments often being self-initiated.
  • Determine and pursue courses of action necessary to obtain desired results, with work checked through consultation and agreement rather than formal review.
  • Provide work direction for a team of engineers, technicians, and other professionals as necessary to complete assignments, including evaluation of work progress and results.
  • Lead multiple critical and/or complex projects.
  • Apply extensive technical expertise and a higher-level understanding of the basic principles of other related disciplines.
  • Fully demonstrate unique technical skills and core competencies for the engineering level by applying advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts, and contribute to the development of new principles, concepts, and technical standards.
  • Conceive, plan, and conduct research to develop procedures, codes, and standards in problem areas of considerable scope and complexity.
  • Support the development of technical documentation through a series of complex and conceptually related studies requiring unconventional or innovative approaches.
  • Exercise authority and technical leadership on assignments that are often self-initiated and self-directed.
  • Manage bid/evaluation processes, including preparation of bid documents, technical evaluations for proposals, and review/approval of recommendations for selection.
  • Form mentoring relationships with less experienced engineers for knowledge transfer and continuous self-development.
  • Provide overall coordination of processes related to budgeting, estimating, forecasting, accounting, and work order management for engineering projects or proposals.
