Fleet Coordinator - Bus Driver
About The Position
The YMCA of Western North Carolina is seeking a Fleet Coordinator - Bus Driver to join their Youth Services team in Asheville, NC. This full-time, hourly position is responsible for the daily maintenance of the fleet and the safe transportation of all program participants. The role involves operating YMCA Youth Services buses for various program needs, including after-school routes, field trips, and camp transportation. Approximately 25 hours per week will be dedicated to Youth Services transportation, with the remaining hours supporting the Occupancy Fleet Department with bus movement, test drives, inspections, and basic fleet-related tasks. The Fleet Coordinator will also be responsible for transporting buses for inspections and repairs, maintaining service logs, performing test drives to identify issues, completing pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and ensuring vehicle cleanliness. Adherence to all YMCA driver policies, state transportation requirements, and child transportation procedures is essential. The position requires maintaining all necessary driver qualifications and serves as a shared support role between Youth Services and Association Fleet needs.
Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age or older.
- Valid CDL required, with appropriate passenger endorsement.
- Must meet all YMCA driver eligibility requirements, including acceptable MVR and background check.
- Must be able to pass NC childcare background check requirements.
- Must be able to pass any required drug and alcohol screening requirements.
- Prior experience operating buses or similar large passenger vehicles preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to manage positive relationships with children, staff and vendors.
- Knowledge of basic bus mechanics and repair needs.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.
- Organizational skills related to handling documents and associated paperwork.
- Comfort with logs, inspection dates, work requests, and simple fleet documentation.
- Must be able to complete and document pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
- Must be dependable, safety-focused, and comfortable transporting children and youth.
- Must be able to communicate vehicle concerns clearly to Youth Services leadership and the Fleet Department.
- Must be able to routinely perform moderate physical activities: climb, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit, walk, and stand for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Must possess finger dexterity, be able to grasp, and perform repetitive motion.
- Must be able to talk, hear, and have visual acuity.
- Must be able to wear required protective equipment, including eye and face protection, as well as closed-toed hoses, gloves, and other personal protective gear while on the job when necessary.

Responsibilities
- Operates YMCA Youth Services buses for program transportation, including after-school routes, field trips, camp transportation, and other approved program needs.
- Transports buses to and from annual North Carolina state inspections, repair vendors, wash services, and other approved service locations as assigned.
- Assists with maintaining a bus inspection and service log, including annual inspection dates, upcoming due dates, and completed inspection documentation.
- Performs routine test drives of buses as directed by the Fleet Department to help identify drivability concerns, warning lights, brake issues, steering concerns, unusual noises, or other operational problems.
- Completes required pre-trip and post-trip inspections and reports concerns promptly through the proper work order or reporting process.
- Communicates vehicle concerns, inspection results, and operational issues to the Fleet Department and Youth Services leadership in a timely manner.
- Supports safe vehicle rotation by helping move buses between sites, programs, vendors, and inspection locations as needed.
- Maintains cleanliness and basic readiness of assigned vehicles, including fueling expectations, trash removal, and reporting damage or safety concerns.
- Follows all YMCA driver policies, state transportation requirements, safety expectations, and child transportation procedures.
- Maintains required driver qualifications, including appropriate license, driving record standards, background checks, training, and any applicable drug/alcohol testing requirements.
- Serves as a reliable transportation support position shared between Youth Services operations and Association Fleet needs.
