About The Position

The North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) is designated as an emergency response Division and a team of professionals who provide forest protection, resource management and environmental education to the residents and landowners of NC through a variety of programs. The NCFS provides services to the 100 counties in NC. North Carolina Forest Service (NCFS) Aviation Division Pilots provide aerial suppression of wildfires in designated areas of North Carolina and support a variety of missions including forest protection, forest management, search and rescue, passenger and supply delivery, fire reconnaissance, and other aerial support to an Incident Commander that may be deemed necessary. The primary mission of this position is to pilot Fixed Wing Single Engine Aircraft in support of airborne patrol, pre suppression and suppression of forest fires. Additional missions may include Air Attack support to fire crews with aerial guidance to tractors, SEAT aircraft, and helicopter crews when directed by the Incident Commander. This position also includes support to ground personnel in wildfire suppression operations by providing eyes in the sky for the Incident Commander to ensure the safety of ground crews when assisting on wildfire suppression efforts. Other flying duties include fire and smoke patrol, lightning strike surveillance, Southern Pine Beetle and other insect infestation detection flights, water quality flights, and other flights as assigned by Region, District, or Aviation management. This is a fixed wing patrol pilot position. Residency required within one (1) hour of the Duty Station located at: 709 Rod Sullivan Road Sanford, NC 27330

Requirements

  • Ability to pilot and navigate an aircraft at low altitudes over rugged and hostile terrain in adverse weather conditions.
  • Knowledge of aircraft maintenance requirements and repair procedures.
  • Ability to work long hours in varying climatic conditions.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with the public.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to represent the Division on aviation matters.
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and a minimum of 1500 hours of flight time in a closely related type of aircraft and/or type of mission, along with a minimum of three years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience.
  • Certification as a FAA commercial or airline transport pilot in airplanes and/or rotorcraft.
  • Possession of an FAA Class II Medical Certificate.
  • May also require ratings in multi- engine (land), instrument flying, and others as assigned.
  • Selected applicants must obtain a U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) medical certificate prior to employment.
