About The Position

The Fixed Route Operator (Routed Coach Operator) position at BRTA is responsible for safely and efficiently transporting passengers along a designated route. This role requires excellent customer service skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to manage operations effectively. Operators are expected to maintain a professional appearance and ensure the cleanliness of the vehicle during their shift. The position involves adherence to schedules, fare collection, and performing pre and post-trip inspections.

Requirements

  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • 3 years verifiable Driving record
  • Valid Massachusetts driver license
  • Clean driving record – DMV printout required
  • Stable work history
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Positive attitude and enjoy working with the general public
  • Adaptive decision-making skills handling unexpected situations
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Able to follow directions
  • Consistently showing up on time and being dependable
  • Ability to obtain a CDL Class B with Passenger and Airbrakes Endorsement
  • Ability to work in an ever-changing environment
  • Must be able to correctly use all electronic technology after training has been provided
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and a physical examination
  • Must pass a background check
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States

Nice To Haves

  • CDL B with Passenger endorsement preferred

Responsibilities

  • Ensure customers feel welcome
  • Effectively communicate with passengers, especially during service disruptions
  • Provide passengers with assistance as needed
  • Accommodate passengers with information such as schedules and guidance
  • Practice defensive driving, anticipating potential hazards and reacting appropriately to avoid accidents
  • Ensure safe on-road operations while maintaining on-time performance
  • Be familiar with assigned routing and detours, including during inclement weather
  • Be aware of ADA Policies and Procedures to ensure compliance
  • Properly operate all wheelchair lifts, including manual operation for each bus model
  • Immediately report any vehicular accident or passenger incident to dispatch and follow reporting procedures
  • Assist and help passengers with mobility devices, such as wheelchairs or walkers
  • Assist passengers with boarding and properly securing wheelchairs
  • Collect the prescribed fare media and notify dispatch of any type of fare evasion or fraud
  • Perform pre and post-trip inspections and enter all defects on to the DVIR forms
  • Follow exact deadhead routing and their assigned revenue service routes
  • Depart the start of each route exactly on-time and never operate ahead of schedule
  • Wear uniforms at all times while in service and display a clean and professional appearance
  • Keep the vehicle clean and sanitary during their shift
  • Perform other duties as assigned
