About The Position

This position is for a Fixed Plant Maintenance - Industrial Mechanic (or) Repair role at Freeport-McMoRan's Morenci operations. The role involves performing diagnostic, maintenance, installation, and repair of fixed plant operational equipment and related systems. The specific level of the position (Level 4 - Processing Diagnostic Mechanic or Level 3: Processing Repair Employee) will be determined based on applicant screening, assessment scores, and relevant qualifications and experience. The posting represents multiple vacancies in various fixed operational department areas including Crush/Convey, Mill, Hydromet, and Shared Services. The Morenci operation is an open-pit copper mining complex located northeast of Safford, Arizona, and has been in continuous operation since 1939. Requirements

  • Work is performed in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
  • Will be required to work rotating shifts in a 24/7/365 operation
  • While performing duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear, see and work in confined spaces
  • Occasionally may be asked required to life moderately heavy to heavy objects up to fifty (50) pounds during the course of the workday
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
  • Candidates may be required to pass a medical exam.
  • Candidates must pass all required training and/or testing.
  • Employees may be required to work a non-standard schedule, which may include shift work (other than day shift) at a 24/7, 365-day operation.
  • Level 4: Two (2) years’ experience in mechanical/maintenance crafts (including welder, boilermaker, machinist or facility maintenance/construction) or a combination of education and experience in industrial mechanical repair and maintenance.
  • Level 4: Must have completed academic and practical competencies required (this includes Line of Progression requirements for internal employees where LOP Exists) and have experience demonstrating the required mechanical aptitude.
  • Level 4: The selected candidate shall demonstrate the ability to apply knowledge and technical skills while achieving 35% score on a written assessment where required. This exam is based on technical skills/abilities and/or academic knowledge, as well as safety.
  • Level 4: Must be able to demonstrate proficient basic welding skills.
  • Level 3: One (1) year of experience in fixed plant operational mechanical/maintenance or a combination of education and experience in industrial mechanical repair and maintenance
  • Level 3: Must have completed academic and competencies required (this includes Line of Progression requirements for internal employees) and have experience demonstrating required mechanical aptitude.
  • Level 3: Selected candidate shall demonstrate ability to apply knowledge and technical skills while also passing a written assessment. This exam is based on technical skills/abilities and/or academic knowledge, as well as safety.

Responsibilities

  • Perform system troubleshooting, maintenance and component removal, repair and installation of jaw and gyratory crushers, vibratory screens, conveyors, dust suppression/collection systems, mobile conveying systems, pump, pit dewatering, hydraulic systems, etc.
  • Perform mechanical and lubrication preventative maintenance such as changing filters in the dust collection systems, checking screens, seals for leakage, oil levels and lubrication systems
  • Perform the removal, repair and installation of piping and pump components, such as: valves, expansion joints and check valves.
  • Prioritize and make decisions regarding equipment repair as needed
  • Responsible for maintaining work orders and performing work area inspections
  • Train and mentor other employees (Level 4 only)
  • Perform advanced welding and fabrication (Level 4 only)
  • May operate mobile equipment such as: Forklifts, cranes, and boom trucks
  • Perform as a Fill-in Supervisor as required (Level 4 only)
  • Performs housekeeping duties (Level 3 only)
  • Performs other duties as required
