About The Position

Fitters at Veritas Steel’s Palatka location perform fitting operations, primarily grinding, as well as repairs and other assigned tasks. They are expected to meet high production demands promptly and complete high-quality work while following company policies and maintaining a safe work environment. The role involves fabricating steel for bridge projects and working alongside experienced steel fitters.

This is a second-shift position with a 48-hour work week, Monday through Thursday from 5 PM to 5 AM. Training takes place on first shift, Monday through Friday from 5 AM to 4:30 PM. The starting rate is $19.45 per hour, plus a $1.20 shift differential; double time applies after 50 hours worked.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Ability to read, write, and comprehend English.
• Ability to read metric tapes.
• Flexibility to work with others in varied circumstances and operate equipment using standardized methods.
• Ability to work with a wide variety of individuals.
• Ability to adapt to changing work priorities, communicate with diverse groups, meet deadlines and schedules, work as part of a team, and handle interruptions.
• Ability to deal effectively with time pressures, long hours, rapidly changing priorities, and stress.
• Ability to lift 40 pounds and carry 30 pounds.
• Ability to push or move objects requiring up to 50 pounds of force and pull with up to 122 pounds of force.
• Ability to stand, walk, stoop, and kneel for up to 99% of the shift.
• Good range of motion when reaching forward, reaching from shoulder to overhead, and bending.
• Agile fingers and thumbs on both hands.

Responsibilities

• Perform fitting operations, primarily grinding, and complete repairs and other assigned tasks.
• Drill, install high-strength bolts, and grind steel components.
• Produce fillet and groove welds using SMAW, SAW, and FCAW processes.
• Read and interpret blueprints.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.
• Participate in continual improvement activities.
• Follow safety practices and company policies.
• Work with other steel fitters to fabricate bridge projects.
