About The Position

The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) is seeking a full-time Fitness Instructor in the Bureau of Health Services/Medical Affairs. This position is open to candidates serving permanently in the civil service Fitness Instructor title or who appear on the civil service list for Exam No.5073. The FDNY is the largest Fire Department in the United States and is recognized as the world's busiest and most highly skilled emergency response agency, dedicated to providing fire protection, emergency medical care, and public safety services. The Fitness Instructor will be responsible for designing, instructing, and monitoring fitness programs, ensuring the health and safety of participants. This includes conducting fitness assessments, prescribing individual exercise programs, demonstrating techniques, and re-evaluating participants' progress. The role also involves supervising participants, ensuring adherence to exercise recommendations, monitoring exercises with weights, inspecting equipment for safety, and maintaining facilities. Additionally, the instructor will review participant paperwork, complete medical procedures and waiver forms, and maintain membership records and progress reports.

Requirements

  • Certifications in First Aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) issued by the American Red Cross or other organization having an equivalent certification program recognized by the employing agency.
  • A Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with a major in nutrition, exercise physiology, health and fitness, physical education or a closely related field, plus 4 years of full-time paid experience in one or more of these areas, 1 year of which must have been in teaching exercise techniques.
  • OR An Associate degree from an accredited college with a major in nutrition, exercise physiology, health and fitness, physical education or a closely related field, plus 6 years of full-time paid experience in one or more of these areas, 1 year of which must have been in teaching exercise techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Designing, instructing, and monitoring fitness programs.
  • Monitoring the health and safety of participants.
  • Conducting fitness assessments.
  • Prescribing individual courses of training exercise.
  • Conducting periodic re-evaluations of participants.
  • Demonstrating techniques for each exercise.
  • Assigning schedules to each participant.
  • Making recommendations on the adoption of a particular course of action following periodic evaluations.
  • Conducting orientation sessions to familiarize participants with exercise apparatus.
  • Supervising participants to ensure adherence to exercise recommendations.
  • Monitoring all exercises involving the use of weights and correcting errors.
  • Inspecting equipment to ensure safety and checking its daily performance.
  • Keeping facilities clear of obstructions and hazardous conditions.
  • Reviewing all paperwork on each participant, including doctor's notes and signatures.
  • Completing medical procedures and waiver forms.
  • Maintaining membership records, data, and chart progress reports.
