About The Position

The City of South St. Paul seeks Fitness Instructors to provide safe, effective, fun and easy to follow fitness classes and programs provided through our Park & Recreation Department. Must be able to deal with people effectively, exhibit responsible judgment, understand and follow oral and written direction and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public. Main duties may include planning, organizing, and implementing components of fitness instruction; supervision of participants enrolled in classes; care and use of all equipment and facility use. This is a variable hour position and the work schedule will vary based on the needs of the programs. Evening and weekend hours are to be expected.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and ability to express directions, demonstrate skills, and provide participants with assistance in the use of equipment and facilities.

  • Age 18 or older

Nice To Haves

  • Prior exercise/fitness instructor experience desired
  • First Aid and CPR certification desired
  • Health and Fitness certification desired

Responsibilities

  • Consult with Recreation Supervisor on needs for specific age groups relating to exercise classes, or any other work-related issues or concerns.
  • Develop customized exercise programs tailored to the needs, goals, and fitness levels of individual clients or groups.
  • Lead exercise classes or personal training sessions, demonstrating proper techniques and ensuring participants perform exercises safely and effectively.
  • Provide encouragement and motivation to clients to help them stay focused and committed to their fitness goals.
  • Track clients' progress and make necessary adjustments to their exercise programs to ensure continuous improvement and adaptation.
  • Educate clients on the principles of fitness, including the importance of proper nutrition, hydration, and recovery, to support their overall health and fitness goals.
  • Maintain a safe exercise environment by enforcing proper equipment use and adherence to safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Offer constructive feedback and guidance to clients on their form, technique, and performance to help them achieve optimal results and prevent injuries.
  • Demonstrate various exercises and movements, using verbal cues and physical modeling, to ensure clients understand and perform them correctly.
  • Provide excellent customer service by addressing client questions, concerns, and inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
  • Complete administrative tasks such as scheduling appointments, maintaining client records, and handling payments.
  • Complete and submit a class evaluation, as required.
  • Stay updated on the latest fitness trends, research, and industry developments through continuing education and professional development opportunities.
  • Assist in marketing and promoting fitness programs, classes, and services to attract new clients and retain existing ones.
  • Collaborate with other fitness professionals, such as personal trainers, nutritionists, and physical therapists, to provide comprehensive wellness solutions for clients.
  • Be prepared to respond effectively to emergencies or accidents that may occur during fitness sessions, including administering first aid and contacting emergency medical services if necessary.
  • Perform other duties of a comparable level or type, as required.
