About The Position

The Fitness Instructor will provide members with safe, effective, and educational group fitness classes. This role involves leading and instructing various exercise formats, ensuring quality content for diverse fitness levels, and maintaining a safe environment. The instructor will also interact with members before and after class, manage studio cleanliness and equipment, report any equipment issues, record attendance, arrange for substitutes, and attend departmental meetings. A strong emphasis is placed on providing exceptional customer service in line with the standards of the Michigan Athletic Club and Sparrow Health System, and adhering to ICARE values (Innovation, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence). The role also requires upholding patient privacy and confidentiality according to HIPAA standards.

Requirements

  • AFAA or ACE Personal Training certification (NASM, ACSM, ACE).
  • Specific certification for specialty classes (e.g., ZUMBA, Kettle Bell, TRX) in addition to a Nationally recognized Group Fitness or Personal Training certification.
  • Minimum of 1 year of previous teaching experience.
  • High school diploma, GED, or successful completion of 12 grades combined with continued enrollment in an early college program.
  • Ability to modify class instruction for all experience and fitness levels.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Strong customer service skills, willingness to assist members.
  • Ability to serve as a role model for fitness and wellness.

Nice To Haves

  • Certifications in specific formats such as Keiser, Madd Dog Athletics, Schwinn, NETA (Cycling); YogaFit, Aerial, Stott Pilate's, PMA, Peak (Mind/Body).

Responsibilities

  • Lead and instruct group fitness classes in a variety of exercise formats (Zumba, Shapes, Body Pump, Traditional Mat Pilates, TRX, Barre) that offer quality content to a wide range of fitness and ability levels in a safe manner.
  • Be available to speak with members before and after class.
  • Ensure clean and organized studios and return equipment to proper storage units after class.
  • Report any broken equipment to the manager.
  • Record class attendance.
  • Arrange for substitute instructors upon absence from class and assist with subbing other classes.
  • Attend all departmental meetings.
  • Provide exceptional customer service that upholds the standards set forth by the Michigan Athletic Club and Sparrow Health System.
  • Serve as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow Health System’s Customer Service Behavioral Standards of Performance.
  • Respect the Privacy and Confidentiality of those we serve.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and respect patient, service provider, organizational confidentiality and HIPAA Security procedures and protocols.
  • Follow established HIPAA privacy procedures when using and/or disclosing protected health information.
  • Maintain and protect patients’ rights under the HIPAA Privacy Standards.
