About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Aquatics and Wellness Supervisor, the Group Fitness Instructor provides professional group fitness instruction and supports the City’s wellness programming by delivering safe, effective, and engaging fitness classes for participants of varying ages and ability levels. This position is responsible for creating a positive, inclusive, and motivating environment that promotes physical health, injury prevention, and overall well-being. The Group Fitness Instructor educates participants on proper exercise techniques, monitors class safety, and ensures adherence to established fitness standards and City policies. Work is performed at City facilities and parks and may include evenings, weekends, and varied schedules based on program needs. The position requires independent class management, professional judgment, and consistent customer service while contributing to the overall success of the City’s aquatics and wellness programs.

Requirements

  • Eighteen (18) years of age or older.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid Certification required.
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings and weekends.
  • Complete the required National Incident Management System (NIMS) training within 6 months of completion of probationary period.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
  • Working knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology, and exercise training principles.
  • Knowledge of group fitness teaching strategies, including music selection, tempo, cueing, choreography, and rhythm.
  • Ability to motivate and engage class participants in a professional manner.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with participants, supervisors, and the public.
  • Ability to apply logical thinking and independent judgment during class instruction.
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency or high-stress situations.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other staff members.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Group Fitness Instructor.
  • Nationally recognized certifications such as AFAA, ACE, or ACSM.
  • Additional specialty fitness certifications preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Leads scheduled group fitness classes, starting and ending on time.
  • Guides participants through warm-up, conditioning, and cool-down phases.
  • Demonstrates proper exercise techniques and explains targeted muscle groups.
  • Modifies exercises to accommodate varying fitness levels and abilities.
  • Uses music, tempo, and cueing to deliver engaging and effective classes.
  • Promotes safe exercise practices and proper equipment use.
  • Monitors participants to ensure a safe and supportive environment.
  • Responds appropriately to injuries, emergencies, and participant concerns.
  • Prepares equipment and materials needed for each class.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of fitness spaces and equipment.
  • Reports equipment, facility, or safety concerns promptly.
  • Provides a positive, inclusive, and motivating experience for participants.
  • Communicates participant feedback and program needs to management.
  • Works collaboratively with staff and demonstrates professionalism and reliability.
