About The Position

This position is open to Alaska Residents only. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 1 located in Fairbanks, Alaska! This role involves annual seasonal work, generally from early August to mid-April, with specific dates varying. The Fishery Biologist will lead field operations for the annual subsistence salmon harvest survey and supervise two Fish and Wildlife Technicians 3. Responsibilities include coordinating logistics, conducting surveys, ensuring data quality (demographic and harvest information), and utilizing GIS products like Survey123 and Field Maps for data management, review, and visualization. The position requires working with residents of 33 Yukon River communities and analyzing data in R to support salmon fishery management. Additionally, the role involves developing maps, creating outreach materials, and contributing to annual report writing. Requirements

  • Experience supervising and providing logistical support to remote field workers.
  • Strong multi-tasking, communication and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated individual.
  • Strong data entry and QA/QC experience.
  • Experience conducting harvest (fish, game, etc.) related surveys and/or collecting other types of information from the public in person and/or over the telephone.
  • High level of experience using ArcGIS (Including AGOL, Survey123, and FieldMaps) for data collection and mapping.
  • High level of experience using R for statistical analyses.
  • High level of experience using iOS mobile devices for communication and data entry.
  • High level of experience using Microsoft Office (Including Word and Excel).
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • May be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.
  • First Aid/CPR certification (training will be provided if not already certified).
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management.
  • Substitution: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses.
  • Substitution: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
