Fisheries Aging Lab Specialist
About The Position
This position serves as the lead technician within the Virginia Marine Resources Commission Age and Growth Lab. They are responsible for conducting routine ageing of Virginia’s marine and estuarine finfish using their hard parts. Responsible for training, scheduling, and supervising hourly contract employees to process fish and their calcified structures (Hard parts). Coordinates laboratory activities for hourly staff. If needed, works with the lab technicians to process fish and their hard parts. Maintains optimal organization, cleanliness, and safety standards within both the dissection lab and ageing lab. Responsible for purchasing and inventory of all lab equipment and supplies. Properly organizes, maintains, and repairs all laboratory equipment and materials as needed. Assists laboratory manager with QA/QC of the lab products and database. Assists laboratory manager to enhance effectiveness and efficiency of the lab operation. Assists laboratory manager with preparing reports, data analysis, and outreach activities. Serves as the secondary ageing structure reader for federally and state managed finfish species.
Requirements
- Knowledge and experience in processing fish, extracting, preserving, and archiving hard parts using biological sampling data collection software and Microsoft office macros.
- Knowledge and experience in organizing and maintaining tools, equipment, and materials in a scientific research lab.
- Education and experience in fish ageing using the hard parts.
- Proficient in using computer and statistical software programs, to include but not limited to Word, excel, and R.
- Ability and experience to create and present scientific research results.
- Able to lift 50 lbs. and large fish.
- A valid Virginia driver’s license, or ability to obtain one.
