About The Position

The Fisheries Technician III will be the lead technician for the sockeye program. Required to perform a variety of technical and skilled tasks related to fisheries management. The duties will include spawning ground and carcass surveys, fish tagging and enumeration, juvenile fish capture and release, recording of detailed field data, boat operation, operation of fish trapping facilities, and fish transport requiring a CDL.

Requirements

• Knowledge of standard fisheries principles and procedures.
• Knowledge and skills in the operation of equipment and tools used in fisheries work.
• Skilled in public outreach and tactful interaction to promote program awareness.
• Ability to provide basic maintenance of facilities and equipment.
• Ability to provide leadership.
• Ability to effectively communicate and express ideas both verbally and in writing for effective cooperation within YN and between co-management agencies.
• Ability to work outside under all types of conditions, in inclement weather, and perform physical labor for extended periods of time.
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Five (5) years of experience as a Fisheries Technician II.
• Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
• Required to pass a pre-employment background check.
• Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Tribal Driver Permit with Defensive Driving Course certificate (to be updated every 2 years).

Nice To Haves

• One year of higher education at a college, university, or post-high school technical school.
• Enrolled Yakama Preference

Responsibilities

• Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tagging of juvenile and adult salmonids.
• Operation of snow mobiles, quads, boats of various sizes, heavy duty trucks (requires CDL).
• Responsible for equipment maintenance.
• Purchasing of operating supplies and inventory.
• Monitoring of early life history study sites: download of temperature data, enumeration of developing fish, deployment and retrieval of technical monitoring gear.
• Spawning ground surveys for genetic sampling, carcass recovery, carcass evaluation (length, condition).
• Operation of the off-ladder adult fish facility at Priest Rapids Dam.
• The safe collection and transport of both juvenile and adult salmonids.
• Collection of various types of field data related to monitoring and evaluation in fisheries management.
