About The Position

This position will collect biological and genetic data from Chinook salmon caught by sport anglers in the Gulf of Alaska. The incumbent will work independently, must be able to identify or learn to identify salmon species, and must have a positive attitude when working with the public. The mission of the Division of Sport Fish is to protect, maintain, and improve Alaska’s sport fisheries. The incumbent collects fisheries’ dependent data that is used by State, national, and international fisheries management organizations to ensure Alaska’s groundfish are managed sustainably. Requirements

  • High school graduation or the equivalent.
  • Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide.
  • Six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • First aid/CPR certification.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to identify or learn to identify salmon species.
  • Positive attitude when working with the public.
  • Experience sampling animals or plants in the field.
  • Experience using identification guides or dichotomous keys.
  • Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Ability to stay organized.

Responsibilities

  • Collect biological and genetic data from Chinook salmon caught by sport anglers in the Gulf of Alaska.
  • Identify salmon using morphological characteristics.
  • Compile, check, and report sampling data.
