The Opportunity: Working in the Cash Receipting Unit in Trust Accounting, you will play a vital part in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of our financial records. You’ll coordinate with the Office of the State Treasurer (OST), Accounting Services team members, and other internal partners to process and reconcile financial transactions related to member and employer retirement contributions, payments, and trust accounts.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience performing a variety of accounting and fiscal duties efficiently and in compliance with established policies and procedures. Experience may include, but is not limited to account reconciliations, tracking and recording payments, accounts receivable and/or payroll. This is typically gained through (2) years of full-time experience; 18 quarter hours or 12 semester hours of college-level classes in accounting can substitute for experience up to one year of experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to compile, transmit, and reconcile financial data across multiple systems.
  • Experience effectively communicating complex or challenging information to a variety of individuals by telephone, email, video meetings, and/or online collaboration tools (such as Teams or Zoom).
  • Demonstrated ability to operate office equipment, including computers, printers, copiers, scanners, ten-key calculators, and multi-line telephone systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Excel and Word (version 2016 or newer).
  • Experience managing and responding to frequent changes in workload and priorities.

  • Professional-level accounting, budgeting, and/or auditing experience. The above experience is typically gained through at least one (1) year of full-time professional experience.

Responsibilities

  • Performing daily reconciliations of cash received between DRS's financial reporting system, the Office of the State Treasurer (OST), and Washington State’s Agency Financial Reporting System (AFRS).
  • Completing monthly reconciliations, including cash, Accounts Receivable, Higher Education Retirement Plan (HERP), 401(H), and Member Benefit Reserve (MIS) reconciliations for 12 retirement trust funds.
  • Reviewing, analyzing, and correcting accounting data flowing into the Agency Financial Reporting System (AFRS) through research, analysis, and recurring reconciliations.
  • Preparing plan and system transfers between retirement systems and plans to keep balances accurately reflected in AFRS.
  • Preparing general fund transfers, as directed by the Budget Officer, for retirement funds that receive State general fund contributions to ensure such funds are being funded properly.
  • Preparing fiscal year-end closing adjustments and accruals to ensure financial records reflect the correct period.
  • Compiling, scanning, and archiving daily cash receipt documentation to support audit and recordkeeping needs.
  • Participating in the design and implementation of new accounting systems, procedures, and controls as needed.
