About The Position

The First Year Success Captain plays a critical role in the success of the First Year Experience program by being embedded in FS 102 course sections as a leader that enhances the classroom experience for both instructors and students while also serving as the sole captain for First Year Success Leaders. The First Year Success Captain leads with dependability, experience, insight, connection, and a mentorship mindset.

Requirements

  • Served as a First Year Success Leader for a minimum of 1 year.
  • Strong understanding of campus resources, student support systems, and referral processes to effectively guide first-year students toward appropriate academic, personal, and institutional services.
  • Demonstrated ability to responsibly handle sensitive student information while adhering to institutional policies, ethical standards, and expectations related to privacy and professionalism.
  • Ability to provide indirect supervision, mentorship, and accountability for student workers by fostering a supportive team environment, modeling professionalism, and encouraging collaboration and growth among peers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills used to coordinate with students, faculty, staff, and campus partners while conveying information clearly, professionally, and empathetically.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Canva, and social media platforms.
  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail, active listening skills, effective written and verbal communication, and confidence in public speaking and presentations.
  • Maintains a customer-focused mindset, adapts to changing priorities, and demonstrates a willingness to continuously learn new skills, technologies, and processes.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and actively participate in all assigned First-Year Seminar class sessions.
  • Assist the instructor with planning and implementing class activities and discussions.
  • Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating professional behavior and student engagement.
  • Build relationships with students to promote a sense of belonging and community.
  • Offer peer support and guidance to first-year students with academic and personal concerns.
  • Facilitate small group discussions and activities to enhance student interaction.
  • Provide information on campus resources such as academic advising, tutoring, wellness services, and student organizations.
  • Refer students to appropriate support services as needed.
  • Maintain regular communication with students outside of class via email, office hours, or scheduled check-ins and keep a contact log.
  • Collaborate with the instructor to identify and respond to student needs or concerns.
  • Attend required training sessions before the semester begins and participate in ongoing development workshops.
  • Meet regularly with the instructor and peer mentor team for planning and reflection.
