About The Position

Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular Board of Regents (BOR) and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave). Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees. This position is a Casual Hire temporary appointment expected to begin October 1, 2026 or soon thereafter, not to exceed 89 days.

Requirements

• Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university and one (1) year of progressively responsible professional experience in higher education or community-based programs with responsibilities for developing and implementing educational, cultural, or community engagement initiatives that support students and/or local communities; or any equivalent combination of education and professional work experience that provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Demonstrated knowledge of UH Hilo academic programs, student support services, and campus resources.
• Demonstrated working knowledge of educational programs, community resources, and organizations serving Hawai'i Island and the ability to connect students with appropriate opportunities and support services.
• Demonstrated proficiency in the Hawaiian language.
• Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and standard office software applications.

Responsibilities

• Provides student engagement and peer mentorship support for UH Hilo first-year students in consultation with relevant units in the UH Hilo Division of Student Affairs.
• Plan, coordinate, and manage the Makamakalehua First -Year program, including the use of student engagement technologies (e.g., Mentor Collective ), aligning activities with Kipuka and UH Hilo student success goals through the integration of Hawaii values, 'olelo Hawai'i, place-based learning, and evidence-informed student success practices.
• Implement a structured first- year mentorship framework that supports student engagement, academic direction, identity development and continued progress toward degree completion, including the incorporation of Hawai'i values, knowledge, and place-based approaches.
• Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate peer mentors supporting first -year student programming.
• Coordinate and oversee peer-mentor-led workshops, events, and activities that promote first -year student success and foster connection to place, community, and campus through culturally grounded engagement opportunities, leadership development, and relationship-building.
• Design and facilitate additional programming that integrates Hawai'i values, 'olelo Hawai'i and place-based approaches in collaboration with the Makamakalehua coordinator team to support first-year student success and foster connection to p lace, community, and campus through culturally grounded engagement opportunities, leadership development, and relationship-building.
• Oversee and maintain data collection for student participants.
• Work in multiple work settings and maintain a variable work schedule as required.
• Other duties as assigned.
