About The Position

First in the Forest advisors play a vital role in advising, empowering, and serving as a resource for the First in the Forest community at Wake Forest University. This role leverages knowledge of on-campus resources and opportunities that First in the Forest students can benefit from/participate in. The advisor serves as a consultant and engages with various stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and students. This position is not eligible for sponsorship of non-immigrant or immigrant visa status through Wake Forest University. All eligible applicants are encouraged to apply.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with 0-2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of the additional challenges and stressors faced by low-income students; interest in and dedication to raising awareness about these issues and supporting Pell and first-generation students.
  • Knowledge of Wake Forest academic and extracurricular programs, including First Year Experience Courses (FYE)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.
  • Knowledge of budget development and management.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, WordPress, the Internet and other relevant software.
  • Ability to travel if necessary
  • Ability to meet requirements of the University's automobile insurance.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a dedicated advisor for First in the Forest students from pre-orientation through graduation; counsels students concerning academic endeavors, internal and external extracurricular pursuits, and involvement at Wake Forest.
  • Guides students in navigating challenges and connecting First in the Forest students to appropriate on-campus resources.
  • Works alongside First in the Forest advisors to coordinate programming for First in the Forest students; designed to promote academic and personal success; foster community among pell and first gen students; and increase student involvement on-campus.
  • Co-teach 1-2 FYE courses to first semester, first year students.
  • Advises on-campus partners on tailoring their support for pell and first gen students; provides opportunities for students to engage intentionally with other offices on campus.
  • Develops social media and online presence to build connections among and awareness of Wake Forest’s first-generation community.
  • May serve as student organization advisor for student groups affiliated with First in the Forest.
  • May serve as a university representative and liaison to secondary schools and students and educate/update guidance professionals and prospective students concerning the University's support for First in the Forest students.
  • Collects data and testimonials from students to better inform institutional support of the First in the Forest student community and to help advocate for experiential funding.
  • Represents Wake Forest University at conferences and other engagements with external university and professional groups focused on Pell & first-generation students.
