About the Role As a First Grade Teacher at Van Avery Prep, you will guide young learners through a foundational year of academic and personal growth. You will create an engaging, structured classroom where students build confidence, independence, curiosity, and essential skills across literacy, mathematics, science, and social studies. In this role, you will design and deliver differentiated, standards-aligned instruction that meets students where they are and helps them advance. Through explicit teaching, purposeful practice, collaborative learning, and meaningful projects, you will help students strengthen foundational reading and writing skills, develop mathematical reasoning, and become thoughtful, responsible members of the classroom community.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, Education, Child Development, or a related field from an accredited institution
Ability to pass a state and federal background check

Nice To Haves

California teaching credential preferred
Prior experience teaching first grade, kindergarten, or another early elementary grade preferred
Strong knowledge of foundational literacy, early writing development, elementary mathematics, and developmentally appropriate instructional practices
Ability to differentiate instruction and support students with varying academic needs and levels of readiness
Strong classroom management, communication, organization, and interpersonal skills
Ability to build positive relationships and communicate effectively with students, families, colleagues, and school leadership
Commitment to creating an inclusive, academically engaging classroom that supports student confidence, independence, and a love of learning

Responsibilities

Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned lessons across first-grade language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies
Build foundational literacy through explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing
Develop students’ mathematical understanding through number sense, operations, problem-solving, and opportunities to explain their reasoning
Create meaningful learning experiences that connect concepts across subjects and encourage curiosity, collaboration, and active participation
Differentiate instruction, materials, and support to meet varying academic needs, learning styles, and levels of readiness
Establish clear classroom routines and use positive, developmentally appropriate classroom management practices
Assess student progress, maintain accurate records, provide constructive feedback, and adjust instruction based on learning needs
Communicate consistently with families regarding student progress, classroom expectations, accomplishments, and areas for continued growth
Collaborate with fellow teachers, specialists, and school leadership to support a cohesive and enriching student experience
Maintain an organized classroom, supervise students responsibly, and follow all school policies and health and safety procedures
