About The Position

This position assists teachers in achieving instructional objectives and helps students take full advantage of the instructional program within the First Class Pre-K Program. The role involves supporting classroom activities, preparing materials, assisting with student supervision, and reinforcing learning for individual and small groups of students. The employee will also assist with non-instructional duties, clerical work, and maintaining records. This position is subject to the Students First Act of 2011 and requires adherence to safety and security protocols, including prompt reporting of suspected child abuse or neglect. Employees must model professional conduct and maintain appropriate boundaries with students. The position is non-exempt and reports to the Principal and/or assigned teacher(s).

Requirements

  • Be at least 19 years of age.
  • Possess a High school diploma or GED.
  • Possess a Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) OR at least 9 credit hours of college coursework in the field of Early Childhood Education or Child Development from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Possess appropriate experience (at least 12 months) working in early childhood or experience in other OSR approved settings.
  • Ability to plan and organize effectively.
  • Ability to implement lesson plans based on local and state courses of study.
  • Basic knowledge, skills, and ability to operate computer programs and related technology.
  • Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers, and administrators in support of instruction.
  • Physical dexterity, mobility, and strength to perform the essential functions of this position.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the school system's rules and policies, administrative procedures, and state and federal rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the First Class Pre-K Program Quality Assurances.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Alabama's Developmental Standards for Preschool Children.
  • Employees are expected to model professional conduct, maintain clear and appropriate boundaries with students, use district-approved channels for communications, and avoid interactions that could be perceived as favoritism, grooming, or undue familiarity.
  • Staff must promptly report suspected child abuse or neglect to law enforcement authorities as required by Alabama law.

Responsibilities

  • Performs tasks related to classroom activities under the supervision of a certified teacher(s).
  • Participates in daily and long-range planning.
  • Prepares classroom materials and develops activities.
  • Assists with non-instructional classroom duties as directed.
  • Assists with supervision of students during lunch, assemblies, field trips, etc.
  • Works with individual and small groups of students to reinforce and to re-teach material introduced by the teacher(s).
  • Works with individual students in need of special attention.
  • Works with teachers and counselors to identify students in need of additional assistance from outside community groups and agencies.
  • Consults with teacher(s) daily regarding student progress and assignments.
  • Conducts activities with individuals and small groups.
  • Assists in preparing class displays and bulletin boards, etc.
  • Assists in caring for and securing classroom equipment and supplies.
  • Assists with classroom management.
  • Assists with clerical work, projects, programs, special events, and field trips.
  • Keeps records and completes necessary reports for the program on a timely basis.
  • Attends and participates in staff development and training sessions.
  • Performs other duties within the scope of his/ her employment as may be assigned.
