About The Position

Under direction, this role involves working with high voltage electricity (69kv, 34kv, 5kv) to build and maintain the Borough's electric system. Responsibilities include constructing poles, hanging power lines, maintaining electric equipment, performing electrician duties for the Borough, interacting with residents to resolve electric issues, and maintaining/troubleshooting traffic lights and streetlights.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of electrical schooling from a vocational or trade school.
  • Successful completion of pole climbing school.
  • Five (5) to ten (10) years of line experience.
  • Valid PA Driver license.
  • Commercial Driver (CDL) license.

  • Less qualified operators may be hired for on-the-job training.
  • Linemen who meet specific experience and knowledge requirements may be hired to perform duties under supervised direction (e.g., 2nd Class Lineman with completion of pole school and advanced knowledge, 1-2 years electrical experience; 3rd Class Lineman with completion of four years vocational trade school and basic knowledge, pole climbing school not yet complete).

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain Borough electric system, including working with high voltage electricity, checking substations, performing maintenance on switching and substations, executing measurements and drawings for blueprints, inspecting lines, executing switching changes, communicating with other linesmen, maintaining breakers and transformers, operating valves, visually checking sub units, sizing transformers, running and maintaining wire, installing backup generators, marking the ground for PA One calls, checking poles after accidents, locating underground wires, maintaining power lines under railroad tracks, upgrading and maintaining transformers, checking thermal pictures, running wire underground, and assisting in the design and layout of electric projects.
  • Perform pole line construction, including digging and setting utility poles and anchors, hanging line hardware, crossarms, and aerial transformers, and running conductors.
  • Repair and maintain trucks and equipment such as chain saws, lawn mowers, and other small power equipment.
  • Perform electrician work for borough buildings, including installing Ethernet cables, setting up and troubleshooting lighting, sound, multimedia, and communications equipment, maintaining the electrical system for the park fountain and pool pump, making taps for service, making aerial and underground splices on conductors, climbing poles and ladders, trimming trees around conductors, working with contractors, and re-lamping borough-owned light fixtures.
  • Interact with customers by responding to trouble calls related to power failure, power quality, and customer electric complaints, diagnosing problems, and replacing or repairing electric wire.
  • Attend to traffic signals in flash, monitor and maintain the preemption system with traffic signals, wire and install street lights (aerial and underground), test and maintain street lights, and maintain lighting in parks.
  • Ensure safety with regards to electricity by covering wires with rubber for other contractors, ensuring safe working conditions, and using protective equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including deploying bucket trucks for various tasks like fixing flags, putting up decorations, installing banners, installing temporary lighting for parades, cutting and setting up the Christmas tree, and snow plowing when necessary.
  • Maintain shop cleanliness and inventory stock.
