About The Position
The First Assistant supports the department by providing direct patient care during surgical procedures. The role assists the surgeon with wound exposure, hemostasis, suturing, and other technical functions to achieve desired surgical outcomes. The First Assistant also supports the perioperative team by scrubbing and caring for the patient before, during, and after surgical intervention.
Requirements
- Meet one of the listed education pathways: graduate of an approved surgical technology program; Associate of Science degree in Surgical Technology or Applied Science; or graduate of a National Surgical Assistant Association-approved Surgical Assistant Program.
- For the Surgical Technician pathway, hold current Certified First Assistant certification and current BLS certification.
- For the Surgical Assistant pathway, hold current Certified Surgical Assistant certification and current BLS certification.
- Have one year of experience practicing as a CFA or CSA.
- Candidates trained outside surgical technology should refer to the criteria on the CSA professional organization website, www.nsaa.net.
