About The Position

The First Assistant Engineer will assist the Chief Engineer in the operation, maintenance, and repair of all vessel engineering systems and processes. This includes diesel propulsion and electric generating systems, deck hydraulic and pneumatic systems, fuel and lubrication systems, refrigeration plants, sewage treatment, water making/desalinization systems, vacuum sanitation systems, and heating and ventilation systems. The role also involves assisting the Chief Engineer in ensuring compliance with USCG regulations, engaging in daily vessel operations, establishing and monitoring preventative maintenance programs, maintaining ship fuel and discharge logs, and managing spare parts inventory and requisitions through the AMOS D system. The First Assistant Engineer is expected to support all ASC policies and company philosophies, participate in company-sponsored and outside training programs, and maintain the vessel according to Det Norske Veritas Class Society and regulatory society requirements.

Requirements

  • Coast Guard License Uninspected Fishing Industry Vessel license required: Assistant Engineer, UFIV – Oceans (HP-Limited)
  • Must possess current US Coast Guard License to legally operate assigned vessel
  • Must be certified to purchase and handle refrigerants
  • Must be highly qualified to operate and troubleshoot all marine systems as indicated above
  • Knowledgeable in oil spill response and recovery per regulations
  • Knowledgeable in proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials
  • Thorough understanding and compliance to Marpol regulations
  • Competent team leader and participant in vessel’s abandon ship, fire-fighting and man overboard drills
  • Ability to weld and cut various types of metals
  • Ability to interface in a cooperative and businesslike manner with company vendor representatives, shipyard representatives and outside contractors
  • Documented knowledge of factory trawlers’ machinery and equipment
  • Must meet US Coast Guard licensing standards regarding physical condition, hearing and eyesight minimums
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment and random drug tests
  • Must be capable of boarding and exiting a vessel without physical assistance by climbing up and down a gangplank or using a Jacob’s ladder
  • Must climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs, or vertical ladders inside and outside the vessel in all weather conditions as extreme as 30 degrees below zero

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Chief Engineer in the operating, maintaining, and repairing of all vessel engineering systems and processes.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer in ensuring compliance with all USCG manning, watch standing, and operating regulations.
  • Engage in the daily operations of the vessel at sea and in port.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer in establishing, monitoring, and maintaining preventative maintenance programs on all main engineering systems.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer in maintaining ship fuel and discharge logs.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer in maintaining spare parts inventory and making requisitions through AMOS D system following established guidelines and procedures.
  • Strictly support all ASC policies and company philosophies.
  • Attend and participate in all company sponsored training programs as well as outside training in management or engineering related courses.
  • Maintain the vessel as Det Norske Veritas Class Society and regulatory society requirements.
