Firmware Engineer (Python / Embedded Linux)

Torus•Salt Lake City, UT
•$135,000 - $180,000•Remote

About The Position

Torus is hiring an individual-contributor Firmware Engineer to develop production-grade firmware for energy storage and management products, working in close partnership with the Firmware Architect. The firmware application layer is Python running on Embedded Linux (Yocto or similar), with hardware communications primarily over RS-485. Devices generate more than a million data points per day and connect to Torus’s cloud platform through MQTT/AWS IoT. The systems also participate in Virtual Power Plant programs and respond to real-time utility dispatch signals. The engineer will translate architectural direction into implementation, own system integration across hardware, data, and software teams, and contribute to the reliability and scaling of a growing device fleet. The role reports to the Head of Embedded Systems and includes participation in an on-call rotation for escalated technical issues. This is a remote, U.S.-based role requiring availability during Mountain Time business hours, with occasional onsite work in Salt Lake City and nearby locations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Embedded Systems, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2–5+ years of hands-on experience developing commercial embedded software or firmware applications.
  • Strong Python proficiency and production experience running Python on Embedded Linux, such as Yocto or similar.
  • Solid understanding of serial communication protocols, including RS-485, Modbus, I²C, CAN, and Ethernet.
  • Experience with real-time embedded systems, including multithreading, inter-process communication, and timing constraints.
  • Ability to read schematics and PCB layouts to troubleshoot hardware integration issues.
  • Must already have legal authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Must be available during Mountain Time business hours.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with IoT device management at scale, including fleet OTA and remote diagnostics.
  • Familiarity with AWS IoT, MQTT, or data telemetry pipelines.
  • Exposure to energy storage systems, inverters, or grid-connected hardware.
  • Knowledge of VPP programs, demand response, or utility interconnection standards such as IEEE 1547 and UL 1741.
  • Experience with containerized embedded deployments, such as Docker or Balena on Linux targets.
  • CI/CD practices in embedded or hardware-adjacent environments.

Responsibilities

  • Develop firmware features across energy storage product lines, including telemetry, control loops, cloud connectivity, and hardware abstraction layers.
  • Own system integration and work with hardware, data, and software teams to ensure interoperability across the full stack.
  • Drive quality through design reviews, automated testing, and documentation.
  • Debug and optimize real-time embedded applications and serial communication interfaces in the field and in the lab.
  • Support scaling operations through deployment tooling, remote monitoring, and root-cause analysis of field issues across the fleet.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for escalated technical issues.
