Firmware Engineer

Normal Computing Corporation•Palo Alto, CA

About The Position

Normal Computing is an applied AI company working on hardware and software for the semiconductor industry, AI infrastructure, and systems. The Firmware Engineer develops low-level software for the company’s system-on-chip (SoC), providing an interface between its physics-inspired ASICs and higher-level software. The role includes developing microcontroller firmware and an API layer that enables upper software levels to use the AI acceleration hardware, while coordinating with hardware and software design teams and understanding both architectures. The engineer debugs across prototyping and ASIC environments and specifies and creates the firmware development environment. This includes acquiring and configuring tools such as compilers, simulators, and debuggers, and working across software simulation, RTL simulation, and physical hardware. The role also develops a verification and stress-test plan and environment to ensure production-quality firmware.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in firmware development.
  • Experience specifying and creating a firmware development environment for a shipping product.
  • Expertise in various firmware languages and target architectures.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • RISC-V experience.
  • FPGA and in-circuit debug experience.
  • Experience with AI acceleration hardware.
  • Hands-on use of LLMs or agentic tools in development workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Develop firmware for an embedded processor on an SoC to support an API bridging higher-level software and the hardware layer.
  • Collaborate with software and hardware engineers to understand and specify API requirements.
  • Specify and create the firmware development environment, including acquiring and configuring compilers, simulators, and debuggers.
  • Work across software simulation, RTL simulation, and physical hardware development environments.
  • Debug in prototyping and ASIC environments.
  • Develop a verification and stress-test plan and environment to ensure production-quality firmware.
