About The Position

Advanced Energy is seeking a Firmware Engineer II to lead embedded firmware architecture for a next-generation platform using C++ object-oriented programming and real-time embedded systems. The role involves designing, modifying, and evaluating embedded software, programmable logic, electronic apparatus, components, or circuitry for electronic equipment and devices. The engineer will participate throughout the embedded program development life cycle, from requirements analysis and design through implementation, integration, and testing. They will own the design and development of embedded real-time software for application-specific hardware, work with Systems Engineers and Program Management to decompose system requirements, and collaborate across engineering teams on hardware/software interfaces and overall system performance. The position is based in a standard office environment in Redwood City, California.

Requirements

  • C++ programming experience with embedded systems.
  • Strong understanding of real-time operating systems, including task scheduling, inter-thread communication, synchronization primitives, and concurrency management in multithreaded environments.
  • Hands-on laboratory experience, specifically with logic analyzers and oscilloscopes.
  • Familiarity with I2C, SPI, Ethernet, and USB.
  • Familiarity with developing self-checking test scripts and automation.
  • Ability to pass an online technical assessment.
  • Familiarity with timing analysis, timing closure, and design pipelining.
  • Ability to read schematics and troubleshoot digital designs down to component level.
  • Strong understanding of synchronous design practices and data flow management, including FIFOs, memories, and pipelining.
  • Embedded C++ programming experience with an RTOS and multiple threads.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • 1–5 years of C++ development experience.
  • Experience collaborating with hardware and software teams.
  • Required hands-on laboratory and hardware debugging experience.
  • B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in signal and power integrity analysis of embedded digital designs.
  • Experience developing specifications and resource requirements for digital/FPGA designs.
  • Experience with EtherCAT, Profibus, and DeviceNET.
  • Experience interfacing with Xilinx FPGAs and SoCs.
  • Familiarity with agile and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CICD).
  • Experience with embedded microprocessors within FPGAs.
  • Experience with Xilinx tools and FPGA HDL coding development.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in all phases of the embedded program development life cycle, including requirements analysis, design, implementation, integration, and testing.
  • Apply sound engineering principles to develop digital designs and architectures for target applications.
  • Own the design and development of embedded real-time software that works with application-specific hardware.
  • Work with Systems Engineers and Program Management to decompose system-level requirements.
  • Develop code and architecture documentation.
  • Conduct design reviews of team members’ work products.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering team members to develop and evaluate hardware/software interfaces, operational performance requirements, and overall system design.
  • Design product architectures to meet specific parameters, including critical timing, complex algorithms, configuration strategies, and module interfaces.
