Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, perform fire suppression and emergency medical services in response to emergency calls.

Requirements

  • Must have either a High School diploma or GED.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Applicant must pass the written general aptitude test aimed at firefighting.
  • Employment is subject to a pre-employment and random drug testing in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state rules and regulations regarding alcohol and/or drug testing.
  • Applicant must pass the physical agility test.
  • Applicant must pass an oral interview board.
  • Applicant must successfully complete the post-offer employment medical examination to include compliance with the State of New Mexico’s OSHA physical, and background investigation.
  • Applicant must comply with the safety guidelines of the County.
  • Applicant must disclose a past injury or medical condition that could prevent them from successfully carrying out the requirements of the job for which they are applying for.
  • Employee must complete required FEMA training(s) as assigned to position.
  • Must have and maintain valid certification as a New Mexico Emergency Medical Technician Basic, Intermediate, or Paramedic by the end of probation.
  • Applicant must have a valid New Mexico driver’s license by employment date.
  • A NM driver’s license class E will be required within 45 days of hire and employee must maintain a valid NM driver’s license, class E, while employed in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Control and extinguish fires and protect life and property.
  • Respond to calls for medical services and administer emergency medical treatment at level of licensure according to approved protocols and standard of care and assist in patient transport when needed.
  • Participate in fire prevention activities, to include inspection of buildings and development of pre-fire plans.
  • Prepare and compile necessary documentation to support duties and responsibilities.
  • Maintain apparatus, quarters, building, equipment, grounds, and hydrants at assigned station.
  • Participate in public education activities, and participate in on duty training, both as student and instructor, as needed.
  • Develop and maintain proficiency in hydraulics/pump operations and aerial operations.
  • Drive apparatus to scene of emergencies.
