The Role As a member of our fire and rescue team, you will perform critical fire suppression and emergency medical duties. This is a fast-paced, high-stakes position that requires technical skill, physical stamina, and the ability to make life-saving decisions under pressure.

Requirements

  • Education: High school diploma or GED (Vocational training in Fire Science/EMT is a plus).
  • Certifications: You must be able to obtain and maintain Indiana certifications for Firefighter I/II, EMT, Hazardous Materials (Awareness & Ops), Technical Rescue Awareness, and NIMS (100, 200, 700, 800). Training provided by department immediately after hire.
  • License: A valid Indiana driver’s license.
  • Stamina: Ability to work 24-hour shifts and perform heavy physical labor (lifting 50-100+ lbs) in extreme environmental conditions.
  • Mindset: Strong decision-making skills, emotional control in stressful situations, and a genuine desire to help people who are distraught or injured.

Nice To Haves

  • Vocational training in Fire Science/EMT is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Emergency Response: Respond to fires, accidents, medical emergencies, and hazardous materials incidents.
  • Life-Saving Care: Act as a certified EMT to stabilize patients and provide emergency transport.
  • Specialized Rescue: Perform search and rescue, ventilation, and even water rescues using department watercraft.
  • Community Engagement: Conduct fire code inspections, lead station tours, and participate in public education and city events.
  • Readiness: Maintain equipment, vehicles, and the station to ensure we are always prepared for the next call.
