About The Position

While operating in a safe manner, performs skilled firefighting, emergency aid response, rescue operations, fire prevention, addresses hazardous materials, and conducts public education activities to protect life, property, and the environment. Responds to emergency and non-emergency incidents and participates in training, inspections, and station maintenance. This is a safety-sensitive position and subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

  • Working knowledge of hazardous materials: identification, containment, and control methods.
  • Working knowledge of ICS.
  • Ability to drive and effectively operate fire apparatus, fire and rescue equipment, and tools, both manual and power-driven.
  • Ability to operate passenger restraint devices; maintain safe following distances; use mirrors and judge vehicle clearance; keep control of a vehicle accelerating, decelerating, and while making turns, given road, weather, and traffic conditions; ability to operate under adverse environmental and driving on all surface conditions; ability to use automotive gauges and controls.
  • Ability to deploy, energize, and monitor vehicles and equipment systems and to correct system problems.
  • Ability to position pumper, aerial, and mobile water supply fire apparatus to operate at a fire hydrant and a static water source, power transfer from vehicle engine to pump, draft, operate pumper pressure control systems, operate the volume/pressure transfer valves (multi-stage pumps only), operate auxiliary cooling systems, make the transition between internal and external water sources, and assemble hose lines, nozzles, valves, and appliances.
  • Ability to operate foam proportioning equipment and connect foam stream equipment.
  • Ability to determine the correct position for pumper, aerial, and mobile water supply apparatus.
  • Ability to transfer power from aerial ladder vehicle engines to hydraulic systems and operate stabilization devices.
  • Ability to raise, rotate, extend, and position to a specified location and lock, unlock, retract, lower, and bed the aerial device.
  • Ability to rotate and position to center, unlock, retract, lower, and bed the aerial device using the emergency operating system.
  • Ability to connect a water supply to a master stream device and control an elevated nozzle manually or remotely.
  • Ability to deploy portable water tanks, connect and operate water transfer equipment, and connect a strainer and suction hose to the fire pump.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License, Class B or higher.
  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Firefighter and Driver Operator Certification is required within 12 months of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Two (2) years of experience as a firefighter or volunteer firefighter preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to emergencies, lays hose, performs fire combat, containment, extinguishment salvage, and overhaul tasks.
  • Perform emergency response activities, including rescue and medical aid.
  • Participates in fire drills and training; attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
  • Prepare accurate and concise reports.
  • Provide fire station and vehicle housekeeping.
  • Inspect and maintain apparatus, equipment, tools, and facilities.
  • Drives, inspects, and performs light maintenance on fire apparatus; operates pumps and related equipment.
  • Maintains positive relations and works cooperatively with others.
  • Lead fire safety classes for the public.
  • Assists in department supervisory and administrative activities as assigned.
  • Assists in training new employees as assigned.
  • Serves as “essential personnel” and must remain available for immediate call-in due to any natural or man-made disaster, or any other event the City Manager, Assistant City Manager, or Fire Chief deems necessary.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
