About The Position

The purpose of this position is to provide fire protection, rescue, and emergency medical services to the public. This role involves performing firefighting and medical emergency services, participating in training and physical fitness, performing daily station activities, and providing community services. The position also involves serving on employee teams to improve city and departmental policies and functions.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain North Carolina Firefighter certification.
  • Ability to obtain North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician certification.
  • Ability to obtain Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations Level Certification.
  • Valid state of residency Driver’s License preferred.
  • Must meet the City criteria for an acceptable driving record.
  • Knowledge of fire safety and education.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the city.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of firefighting standards.
  • Mechanical repairs.
  • Using computers and applicable software applications.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Responsibilities

  • Performs firefighting and medical emergency services by extinguishing fires from structures and vehicles, effectively operating equipment, evaluating emergency scenes, delivering medical care to victims, and assisting in hazardous material operations.
  • Participates in required training classes and physical fitness.
  • Performs daily station activities by completing incident reports and daily logs, entering records of equipment checks and repairs, and maintaining the station house and grounds.
  • Provides community services by assisting citizens with questions and fire protection issues, participating in school safety programs, conducting station tours and equipment demonstrations, and educating the public.
  • Serves on employee team by assisting in improvements of existing city and departmental policies and functions.
