About The Position

The City of Deltona is currently hiring for a full-time, non-exempt, Florida-certified Firefighter/EMT or Firefighter/Paramedic vacancy. Deltona is located along the I-4 corridor between Daytona Beach and Orlando, occupying approximately 47 square miles with a population of approximately 98,500. The city is mostly residential but is experiencing significant commercial growth. Deltona Fire Rescue operates from 5 stations and a logistics station, with a team of 84 operations personnel and 16 administrative personnel. The department's fleet includes 4 ALS engines, 1 ALS Quint, 3 ALS Transport units, 1 Division Chief's vehicle, 1 Heavy Rescue, and several specialty vehicles. They also have an ALS Bike Team, Honor Guard, and a Special Operations Team (LTRT532).

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current Florida State Firefighters Certificate of Compliance
  • Current Florida State Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification (must be a Lead Paramedic within 4 years of hire)
  • Current Florida State Driver's License
  • Current Basic Life Support CPR Certification (AHA preferred)
  • EVOC or CEVO 16-hour Emergency Driving Certification

Nice To Haves

  • Current Florida State Paramedic or in local school to become one

Responsibilities

  • Protect life and property from all hazards within the department skill sets.
  • Perform fire duties, rescuing persons and property from hazards.
  • Perform emergency medical service duties as assigned.
  • Follow the Department's policies and procedures, and emergency plans and operation.
  • Obtain and maintain thorough knowledge of specific laws, plans, policies and procedures, and codes pertaining to the Fire Department and the assigned organizational subunit.
  • Follow the directions of the chain of command and written policies during the operation of the organizational subunit in the event of natural or manmade disasters.
  • Respond to situations while following orders to provide staffing in order to operate fire or EMS equipment, within city boundaries or outside of them.
  • Respond to emergencies with a fire company or rescue unit, and answer Advanced or Basic Life Support medical emergencies as part of a fire or rescue company.
  • Aid in the mitigation of both emergency and non-emergency incidents as directed by supervisor or policy.
  • Serve overtime during times of vacancy or out of ordinary events.
  • Keep up to date in both knowledge and practical application with both EMS and Fire tasks by attending professional and technical seminars, training classes and conferences, which may require off-shift commitment.
  • Conduct station tours; provide public information and strive to set a professional standard within the community.
  • Proactively manage and exercise control over rumors and negativity within the workplace, fostering a positive and constructive work environment.
  • Remove, extract, and rescue persons from danger, recognize acute symptoms requiring immediate care, and assist in administering life-saving medical and rescue procedures to injured or afflicted persons.
  • Connect hose to hydrants and pumps; join hose sections and connect nozzles to hose; connect to standpipes and sprinkler systems where applicable; enter burning buildings with or without hose lines; operate nozzles and spray water, foam, and/or other specialized control agents as applicable.
  • Operate hand fire extinguishers and similar equipment in extinguishing fires; raise and climb ladders; work from aerial apparatus where applicable; ventilate burning buildings to remove smoke and gases.
  • Perform salvage operations including sweeping water, removing debris, and placing smoke ejectors.
  • Make daily inspections of apparatus and equipment and notify supervisor of defects; perform cleaning and maintenance tasks in and about assigned station.
  • Recognize hazardous material situations; make identification of unknown substances using specialized testing equipment if qualified; set up decontamination procedures; assist agencies in the removal/disposal of hazardous material within qualifications.
  • Perform work area and station cleaning and grounds maintenance.
  • Clean vehicles and equipment assigned.
  • Perform qualified EMS skills upon patients when assigned to them or is assisting others in the care of other qualified personnel.
  • Assist Engineer with minor maintenance and cleaning of vehicles and equipment.
  • Follow policy and orders from supervisors.
